Julia Saleur and Mehkia Applewhite each scored 13 points to lead the Cape Henlopen High girls’ basketball team to a 58-45 victory at Delmarva Christian in the second round of the DIAA state tournament.
Applewhite also added seven rebounds, seven steals, four assists and a blocked shot for the Vikings. Morgan Mahoney also finished in double figures with 11 points while Ja’Onna Lee scored eight.
Sierra Troyer led Delmarva Christian with a game-high 25 points.
Cape Henlopen, seeded 10th in the 24-team field, advanced to the quarterfinals where it will play at No. 2 seed Sanford on Monday at 7 p.m.
St. Elizabeth 53, Dover 41: The Senators were tied with St. Elizabeth after the first quarter and trailed by just three at halftime before the Vikings went on a 19-6 run in the third quarter.
St. Elizabeth, seeded fourth, will host No. 5 seed Tatnall at Monday (7 p.m.) in the quarterfinals.
Caravel 63, Caesar Rodney 44: The Riders fell to the tournament’s top seed on Friday night.
College baseball
Delaware 15, Rider 1: Dominic Ragazzo and Bryce Greenly each recorded three hits while Chris Ludman did not allow an earned run in seven innings in UD’s home opener.
Ragazzo finished 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, while Greenly, a Milford High product, was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBI to pace the 15-hit Blue Hen attack. Joey Loynd contributed two hits and three RBI, while Jake Dunion and Aidan Kane added two hits apiece.
Ludman produced another solid start on the mound, giving up just one unearned run on five hits while striking out four and not walking a batter to earn his second win of the season. Jose Ledesma and Nate Rolka then each tossed a scoreless frame to close out the victory.
College softball
Hens split doubleheader: The Blue Hens earned a 7-3 come-from-behind victory over SIUE before falling 8-5 to Illinois State on Friday. With the two results, the Blue Hens move to 9-6 on the season.
Brittney Mendoza led the UD offense against SIUE with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) and Chloe Blantz each had two hits, while Glanden and Hanna Garber both drove in two runs.
Megan Stauffer picked her first win in a Delaware uniform with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, scattering three hits. Emily Winburn earned her first save of the season with 2.0 shutout innings, striking out four batters.
Glanden and Halle Hisamore led the Blue Hens with two hits apiece in the nightcap, while Hanna Garber walked three times. Mendoza, Kailey Christian and Blum all also walked twice.
