Local roundup: Cape, Delmar and Sussex Tech all advance in baseball

Top-seeded Cape Henlopen High erupted for 13 runs in the second inning before downing No. 17 Lake Forest, 19-1, in the second round of the DIAA baseball state tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The victory was the 17th in a row for the Vikings (18-2), who will host No. 9 Sussex Tech on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the state quarterfinals.

Cape Henlopen finished with 14 hits, including five doubles. The Vikings beat the Spartans by only two runs during the regular season.

Luke Couch (3-for-3, 3 RBI, 3 runs), Brenn Scott (2 hits, 3 RBI) and Austin Rhue (2 hits) paced Cape Henlopen. Pitcher Josh Reinhold earned the win with reliever Timmy Hitchcock throwing two scoreless innings.

Lake Forest (12-8), which led 1-0 after one inning, got two hits and a run scored from Adam Schiff.

Delmar 4, Middletown 3: The seventh-seeded Wildcats built a 4-0 lead before holding off the Cavaliers in the second-round game.

Henlopen South champion Delmar (12-7) will play at No. 2 Conrad in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Starting pitcher Andrew Callaway, Bryce Hendricks and Ryder Keidel combined to throw a three-hitter for the Wildcats, who scored three runs in the third inning.

The No. 10 Cavaliers answered with three runs in the sixth before falling short. Andrew Steinhaus pitched a complete-game three-hitter for Middletown.

Conrad 5, Caesar Rodney 3: The No. 18 Riders held a 2-0 lead before the second-seeded Red Wolves took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the third.

Conrad next hosts No. 7 Delmar on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the state quarterfinals.
CR, which finishes the season 11-9, got two hits from Colson Bennett. Trailing 5-2, the Riders rallied for a run in the top of the seventh before falling short.

Sussex Tech 4, Concord 3: The No. 9 Ravens scored three runs in the sixth to rally past the eighth-seeded Raiders.

Sussex Tech will play at Henlopen North rival Cape Henlopen on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Ravens, who trailed 3-0 after the second, got two hits each from Rosnell Lewis (2 runs) and Jonathan Stokley. Jaryn Sample and Grant Allen also had hits for Sussex Tech.

Appoquinimink 4, Indian River 3: Chad Lawrence doubled and scored on a passed ball to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth and lift the No. 3 Jaguars.

The No. 14 Indians, who out-hit Appo, 8-5, tied the contest with a run in the top of the sixth. Ben Cordrey had two hits with an RBI.

CR finishes the season at 11-9.

Delaware Military 8, Laurel 5: The sixth-seeded DMA scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to put away the tournament win victory.

The No. 22 Bulldogs (11-8) led 2-0 early before having their eight-game winning streak snapped. Kaden Shockley had two hits for Laurel.

Sanford 23, Caesar Rodney 5: The third-seeded Warriors built a 15-2 halftime lead before downing the No. 6 Riders in the DIAA state quarterfinals on Saturday.

Sanford, which beat CR for the second time this season, improves to 15-2 and will face No. 2 Salesianum in the state semifinals on Wednesday.

The Riders finish the season with a record of 10-7.
