Cape Henlopen High built a 12-goal lead by halftime before downing Caesar Rodney, 18-4, in Henlopen North boys’ lacrosse on Wednesday night.
The Vikings improved to 5-0 in the North, 7-3 overall. Cape Henlopen hasn’t lost to a Henlopen Conference team since falling to the Riders in 2017.
Gabriel Best (4 assists), Hank D’Ambrogi (2 assists), Michael Frederick (2 assists) and Blake Gipko all tallied three goals for the Vikings. Goalies Carson Kammerer and Michael Sposato made three saves each.
CR got two goals from Jackson Spino and one each from Clay Friend and Hunter Christensen. Jakob Buxton and Dylan Bennett combined for nine saves.
Lake Forest 16, Woodbridge 4: Brandon Tice netted eight goals and a pair of assists in the Spartans’ South victory.
Aidan Dunn had three goals and two assists with Chaz Hughes contributing two goals and an assist. Caleb Secrist made seven saves.
Dover 13, Milford 10: The Senators took a 10-7 lead into the fourth quarter before improving to 5-5 overall with the Henlopen North victory.
Landan Hajek had three goals and an assist for the Buccaneers.
Smyrna 25, Sussex Central 3: The Eagles tallied 23 first-half goals in the Henlopen North victory.
Caravel 18, Indian River 10: The Indians fell behind 7-1 in the first quarter before dropping the non-conference decision.
Girls’ lacrosse
Dover 17, Milford 3: The Senators scored 10 of 11 second-half goals to put away the conference win.
Kyleigh Dill tallied six goals with Superia Clark adding five for Dover, which out-shot the Buccaneers, 26-12. Regan Torbert made seven saves.
Milford’s Margie McMillan made nine saves.
Sussex Academy 20, Smyrna 1: Macy Steinwedel (3 assists) and Quinn Nutter tallied three goals apiece as the Seahawks stayed unbeaten at 9-0.
Peyton Hagy made eight saves for Sussex Academy, which has allowed four goals or less in seven of its nine games. Twelve players scored goals for the Seahawks, who play at Cape Henlopen on Friday evening.
Mia Schultz tallied the lone goal for the Eagles.
Cape Henlopen 19, Caesar Rodney 0: The Vikings netted 14 first-half goals before earning the Henlopen North win.
Carrie Clausius (3 assists), Riley Keen (3 assists), Emily Rishko and Lindsay D’Ambrogi all netted three goals for Cape, which registered its third shutout of the season.
Baseball
Lake Forest 10, Sussex Academy 0: Adam Schiff, who struck out eight in four innings, and David Lewis combined to pitch a five-inning two-hitter in the Spartans’ South win.
At the plate, Schiff had a triple, double and three RBI while Chase Killen, Gabe Martin and Tristan McCray had two hits apiece.
Wyatt Skinner had both Sussex Academy hits.
Indian River 4, Delmar 3, 11 inn.: Benjamin Cordrey singled home the winning run in the top of the 11th as the Indians out-lasted the Wildcats in a South matchup on Tuesday.
Kyle Coffey pitched six shutout innings to earn the victory.
Aaron Rhodes and Julian Burdett both had multiple hits for Delmar.
Sussex Academy 8, Laurel 6: The Seahawks overcame an early four-run deficit to post the South win in extra innings on Tuesday.
Girls’ soccer
Dover 8, Woodbridge 0: The Senators netted four goals in each half before evening their record at 5-5 with the win on Tuesday night.
Boys’ volleyball
Cape Henlopen 3, Dickinson 1: The Vikings won the last two games to earn the victory by scores of 25-19, 15-25, 25-23, 25-19.
High school sports
Sites set for most DIAA state finals: Most of the state championship finals for this year’s high school spring sports season will be held in the Dover area, the DIAA announced on Wednesday.
The baseball state title game will still be played at Wilmington’s Frawley Stadium on May 29.
Dover High will host several state finals, including:
May 21: Outdoor Track Preliminaries & Unified Track Championship Meet
May 22: Outdoor Track Championship Meet
May 27: Girls’ Lacrosse Championship
May 29: Boys’ Lacrosse Championship
Caesar Rodney High will host the Division I and II girls’ soccer state championship games on June 1.
The golf state tournament will be held at Maple Dale Country Club on June 1-2.
Sites for both the tennis and softball state finals haven’t been determined yet.
“We are extremely grateful to our member schools and athletic directors for their willingness to host our championships during what has been a challenging year,” DIAA executive director Donna Polk said in a press release. “We look forward to making this year’s Championships a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.”
College softball
Delaware 1, Villanova 0: Blue Hen freshman lefthander Delani Sheehan fired a four-hit shutout while Brittney Mendoza belted a home run for Delaware (26-11).
Mendoza accounted for the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when she blasted a 1-1 pitch over the fence in leftcenter for her fifth home run of the year. Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) added two hits.
