Local roundup: Cape battles past Lake in baseball; Dover girls top Polytech in lacrosse

Cape Henlopen High shook off an early four-run deficit before holding off Lake Forest, 8-6, in baseball on Friday afternoon.

The victory was the ninth in a row for the Vikings (10-2), who took a 6-4 lead with four runs in the fourth.

Reliever Tim Hitchcock struck out nine after entering the game in the third. Josh Reinhold (3 hits, 3 RBI), Austin Rhue (2 hits) and Nick Cox (2 hits) also led Cape.

Leighton Webb (2 RBI), Tristan McCray (2 runs) and Jonathan Tyndall (2 runs) paced Lake Forest, which scored twice in the bottom of the seventh before falling short. The Spartans (6-5), who had a three-game winning streak snapped, led 4-0 in the second.

Dover 11, Delmar 3: The Senators scored five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to overcome a 3-2 deficit.

Winning pitcher Hunter Chambers struck out 12 in six innings as he and Brandon Yoder combined on a five-hitter. Chambers also went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Kyler Shepherd scored a pair of runs for the Wildcats.

Smyrna 13, Sussex Academy 2: James Tassone went 3-for-3 for the Eagles, who scored six first-inning runs.

Connor Strauss, Liam Meginniss and Nathan Donahue combined to pitch a five-inning one-hitter.

Theodore Layton had the lone hit for the Seahawks.

Girls’ lacrosse

Dover 11, Polytech 7: Superia Clark and Ashtyn Torbert both tallied four goals and a pair of assists for the Senators.

Kyleigh Dill added three goals and an assist for Dover, which outshot the Panthers, 29-16. Shiana Hall-Carter made six saves.

Maddie Todd had three goals and an assist for Polytech, which got five saves from Adelyn Mollohan.

Caesar Rodney 20, Sussex Tech 3: Freshman Elle Roberts netted four goals for the Riders (8-4), who won for the fourth time in the last five games.

Lyndsey Weller, Alexis Riley and Rylie Faircloth all added three goals for CR, which out-shot the Ravens, 28-8.

Tori Adams scored twice for Sussex Tech.

Cape Henlopen 20, Smyrna 1: Louise Rishko (1 assist), Molly Mendez (5 assists) and Maren Buckaloo (2 assists) all tallied three goals for the Vikings in the North win.

Regan Nacrelli scored for the Eagles, who got 10 saves from Addison Beamer.

Softball

Padua 12, Milford 7: The Pandas scored five runs in each of the first two innings before topping the Buccaneers.

William Penn 3, Delmar 2: The Colonials edged the Wildcats in a non-conference matchup.

Milford 18, Sussex Tech 13: In a back-and-forth contest, the two teams combined for 31 runs and 33 hits before the Buccaneers posted the North win.
Ashley Bullock had five hits for Milford while Lauren Dickerson hit a pair of home runs.

Laniya Lewis had four hits for the Ravens, including a homer and triple.

Smyrna 7, Cape Henlopen 5: The Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally for the North win.

Loretta Price (2-for-3, 2 runs, 4 RBI) homered while Kalissa Andruzzi added two RBI for Smyrna.

Alivia Heers hit a pair of homers with three RBI for the Vikings.

Boys’ lacrosse

Caesar Rodney 20, Sussex Tech 1: Sophomore Patrick Craig collected eight goals and six assists in the Riders’ North victory.

William Li added six goals and an assist for CR.

The Hill, Pa. 12, Cape Henlopen 8: The Vikings (7-2) fell behind 11-5 after three quarters before dropping the non-conference decision.

Mikey Frederick, Luke Burton and Hank D’Ambrogi all scored two goals while

C.J. Fritchman won 15 of 23 faceoffs. Evan Erhardt made 18 saves.

Indian River 21, Woodbridge 10: The Indians downed the Blue Raiders in a Henlopen South matchup.

Girls’ soccer

Dover 3, Sussex Central 3: A Henlopen North contest that deadlocked, 2-2, at halftime ended in a tie.

St. Georges 8, Laurel 2: Delaney Larrimore and Yaneli Gonzalez Arreaga both tallied goals for the Bulldogs while Alexis Boyer made 15 saves in the setback.

Boys’ volleyball

Indian River 3, Conrad 0: The Indians earned the win by scores of 25-23, 25-16, 25-13.

Smyrna 3, Newark 0: The Eagles downed the Yellowjackets by scores of 25-11, 25-15, 25-18.

Cape Henlopen 3, Delaware Military 0: The Vikings won a closely-contested match with the Vikings, 27-25, 25-22, 29-27.

Cape was led by Alexander Patterson (12 kills, 2 aces, 10 digs), Odin DeLazaro Potemski (9 kills, 10 digs), Ethan Shuttleworth (7 digs, 28 assists) and Brady Lamb (5 kills, 3 aces, 17 digs).

College baseball

Delaware State 8, Norfolk State 3: Peter Carreca tossed his first complete game and Miguel Rivera (Polytech) drove in a season-high four runs to lead the Hornets to the MEAC win.

Carrecca scattered three runs on seven hits, while striking out five with only one walk to post the Hornets’ first nine-inning complete game since Cole Bates defeated Norfolk State last April.

Rivera was 3-for-4 with a triple, double and four RBI, one shy of his career best. Trey Paige and Mike Worthington each had two hits and an RBI for the Hornets.

Charleston 13, Delaware 2: The Cougars had 18 hits and scored in six of their eight at-bats in the CAA victory.

Jake Dunion had both Blue Hen hits and added an RBI with a run-scoring single in the fourth.
