Local roundup: Camden-Wyoming wins Senior League District I title

Camden-Wyoming captured the Senior League baseball District I title with a 13-3 victory over Smyrna-Clayton on Friday evening.

The title sends Camden-Wyoming to the state tournament, which begins on Tuesday at Newark National. The District I champs will face District III champion Georgetown in the opener at 6:30 p.m.

Camden-Wyoming went 4-0 in the district tourney. On Friday, winning pitcher Anthony Hatch threw four shutout innings with five strikeouts and two walks and also had two hits and a pair of RBI at the plate.

Alex Newman, who pitched the final inning, had a hit and an RBI. Also leading Camden-Wyoming were Patrick Easton (3-for-4, double, 3 RBI), Isaac Thomas (2 hits, 2 RBI), Eric Stewart (1 hit, 2 RBI) and Daylen Aviles (1 hit, 1 RBI).

Tyler Lohman, Hunter Thompson, Matt Mannering, Aaron Massey and Tre Hoisington all had a hit for Smyrna-Clayton, which finished 2-2 in the tourney.

Softball

Senior League

Smyrna-Clayton 12, Camden-Wyoming 5: Smyrna-Clayton reached the District I finals with the win on Friday night.

Smyrna-Clayton will host M.O.T. today at 7 p.m. needing to wn twice to take the district title.

Against C-W, winning pitcher Delaney Smith struck out eight in seven innings . Also leading Smyrna-Clayton were Kelsey Long (4-for-4, 4 runs), Jaelyn Johnson  (2-for-4, 5 RBI) and Cassie Vargas (two homeruns).

Pitcher Madison Carrell struck out five in five innings for Camden-Wyoming while adding a hit and an RBI. Alyssa Going went 2-for-4 with a double.

M.O.T. 11, Camden-Wyoming 8: M.O.T. rallied for the final five runs of the contest to take the District I winners’ bracket victory on Friday night.

Camden-Wyoming led, 8-6, in the fourth inning when the contest was suspended by rain on Thursday.

Major League

M.O.T. 10, Canal 0: Samantha Stokes threw a perfect game, striking out 11 of the 12 batters she faced, as District I champion M.O.T. opened the state tournament with a win on Friday night.

M.O.T. will take on District III champion and tourney host Lower Sussex on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the three-team double-elimination tournament.

Major League is the only Little League age group that is holding tournaments beyond the state level this summer. The state champion advances to the Eastern Regional in Bristol, Conn.

Lacrosse

DE Turf to host national teams: DE Turf will host the USA Lacrosse men’s and women’s national teams for practices and exhibition games on Tuesday.

The practices and exhibitions are open to the public and coincide with the USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals, which will be held at DE Turf on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The practices for the national teams are 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The men’s team exhibition is at 5 p.m. with the women’s team exhibition at 6 p.m. The practices and exhibitions are free to attend but parking is $10.

Local golf

Garnsey wins girls’ Juniors: Wyoming’s Reagan Garnsey shot a 74 on Friday to win the Delaware Junior state golf tournament title.

The 14-year-old finished with a two-day total of 153 to finish 17 shots ahead of second-place Meredith Finger (170) of Wilmington as the even concluded at Mulligan’s Pointe.

Andrew Chen won the boys’ state Junior crown after winning a one-hole playoff with Matt Homer. Both players carded totals of 143 to tie for first place in the 36-hole event.

College golf

Hens honored for academics: Delaware women’s golfers Lexi Dart, Oihana Etxezarreta, Siena Ferrick and Lene Sperling have been named Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars.

Dart, who earned the award for the second consecutive year, ranked third on the team with a 76.33 average round and tied for fifth place at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate. Etxezarreta was named second-team All-CAA and the squad’s Team MVP while her 74.56 average round is the sixth lowest in program history.

Golfers must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 to earn the award.
