Local roundup: Camden-Wyoming wins Junior League District I opener

Camden-Wyoming blanked Smyrna-Clayton, 15-0, to open the Junior League baseball District I Tournament on Wednesday night.

C-W is slated to play again today at 8:30 p.m. in the four-team tourney being hosted by Dover.

Steven Donigan pitched a four-inning one-hitter with 10 strikeouts for Camden-Wyoming while also going 2-for-2 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored. Rhett Lancaster added a double, two RBI and two runs.

Mason Jewell had the lone hit for Smyrna-Clayton, which plays again today at 6 p.m.

Senior League

State Tournament

Brandywine 7, Camden-Wyoming 2: Brandywine scored the contest’s last five runs to break a 2-2 tie and advance to Friday’s state finals at Newark National.

Camden-Wyoming (1-1) faces Georgetown (0-1) today at 6:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to take on Brandywine (1-0) on Friday.

Patrick Ester had two hits for Camden-Wyoming with Aiden Durham, Eric Stewart, Graham Buckson and Isaac Thomas all adding one hit apiece.

8-10 District I Tournament

Milford 15, Smyrna-Clayton 0: Milford picked up a shutout win on Wednesday in its first game in the six-team District I tourney being held at M.O.T.

Milford is slated to play Camden-Wyoming today at 6 p.m.

M.O.T. 17, Dover 0: The Middletown-area squad started out with the victory and will play Felton today at 8:30 p.m.

American Legion

DE Post-1 4, Nanticoke Post-6 2: Post 1 tied the game with a run in the seventh before scoring twice in the eighth to pull out the win on Wednesday night.

Winning pitcher Pat Crawford threw a complete game five-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Nanticoke starter Wade Brooks allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts. The Patriots also turned a 6-3 double play when shortstop Ben Brown caught a fly ball in short left field, then threw out the baserunner, who had tried to advance on the play.

Softball

8-10 District I Tournament

Camden-Wyoming 21, Milford 3: Camden-Wyoming moved on to today’s district finals with the win on Wednesday.

C-W takes on M.O.T. today at 7 p.m. at Dover.

M.O.T. 21, Milford 1: M.O.T. reached the district finals with the win on Tuesday night.

Leading the way were Ava Perrucci 3-for-3, 3 runs, 5 RBI, Sophia Evans (2-for-2, 3 runs, 3 RBI) and Aubrey Martin (2-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI). Ava Perrucci and Aubrey Martin both pitched for M.O.T., which plays today at 7 p.m. at Dover.

Basketball

Wagner to lead Blue-Gold: Former Caesar Rodney and Lake Forest High boys’ basketball coach Mike Wagner has been named the new director of the Blue-Gold All-Star Games.

Wagner takes over the position held by Larry Kimmel, whose father, Morton, started the event in its present form in 1999. The games have raised over $2 million for The Opportunity Center, Best Buddies Delaware, and Cancer Care Connection.

Wagner has served as a member of the Blue-Gold Basketball committee for the last 15 years. He has over 29 years of combined basketball coaching and athletic administration leadership experience.

For the past 14 years, Wagner has served as both the scholarship chair and treasurer of the Delaware Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association.
