Local roundup: Camden-Wyoming takes Junior League District I title

Camden-Wyoming shut out Dover, 12-0, on Sunday night to capture the District I title in Junior League baseball.

CW (3-0) will return to Milford for the state tournament, which starts on July 24.

Brandywine plays the District III champion on July 24 with Camden-Wyoming facing the winner on July 25 in the three-team, double-elimination tournament.

The state champion earns a spot in the East Regional in Freehold, N.J.

In its three district tourney victories, Canden-Wyoming out-scored its opponents by a combined 42-4.

Dover (3-2) had a three-game winning streak snapped with Sunday’s loss.

Major League

District I tournament

Milford 12, Smyrna-Clayton 2: Milford (2-0) advanced to the winners’ bracket finals with the win on Sunday evening.

Milford will take on MOT (2-0) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Dover with the winner playing in Thursday’s district championship game.

On Sunday, Connor Hudson allowed only three hits and struck out 10 in five innings for Milford. Tristen Willey, Mason Farissier and Austin Scott all had three hits apiece.

Izaac Willey drove in Ian Coker with Milford’s final run.

Mibia Gawuah struck out five for Smyrna-Clayton (0-1), which faces Camden-Wyoming on Monday at 8:30 p.m. Frank Sacco reached base twice and scored a run while Dom Demarco doubled and also scored.

MOT 10, Felton-Harrington 0: MOT earned its spot in the district winners’ bracket with the shutout win on Sunday.

In a contest that resumed in the second inning after being suspended by rain on Saturday, Brendan Hortiz hit the first pitch on Sunday for a two-run double that gave MOT the lead for good.

Gavin Thomas and Nathan Collins combined to pitch a one-hitter. Nathan Collins (2-for-3) and Lee Santoro also doubled.

8-10 tournament

District I

Camden-Wyoming 5, Smyrna-Clayton 4: Camden-Wyoming (2-0) rallied for win in a game played on Friday.

CW takes on MOT on Monday at 6 p.m. at Smyrna-Clayton in the winners’ bracket finals.

On Friday, Robby Burris made a game-saving catch in the bottom of the sixth for the final out with two runers on base. Pitcher Isaiah Roach eraned the win, Greyson Voshell reached base three times and scored twice while Tucker Hinkle and Andrew Collins both had two-run singles.

Smyrna-Clayton starting pitcher Landon Natsch had 10 strikeouts in four innings and scored two runs. Greyson Hudson was 2-for-3 with a double.

Dover 10, Felton-Harrington 3; Host Dover evened its record at 1-1 and will face Smyrna-Clayton Monday at 8:30 p.m.

Smyrna-Clayton 5, Milford 4: Smyrna-Clayton stayed alive in the losers’ bracket with the win.

Softball

Senior League

New Castle/Suburban 15, Camden-Wyoming 10: The District II champions evened the best-of-three state tournament at 1-1 with the victory on Sunday night.

The two squads were slated to play again on Sunday night at Suburban to decide the title. The state champion earns a spot in the East Regional bieng played in Worcester, Mass.
