Caesar Rodney High picked up a pair of first-period pins before downing Milford, 59-15, in a Henlopen North wrestling match on Wednesday evening.
Owen Dixon (175 pounds) had a 54-second pin for the quickest fall of the night for the Riders (3-1 North, 6-1 overall). Cole Moffett (113) added a pin in 1:26 for CR.
Also winning by fall for the Riders were Nathan Moore (132), Jaxon Kopp (144) and Cody Waski (157).
The Buccaneers got pins from Hunter Durham (126) and Jordan Curry (190).
Smyrna 49, Sussex Tech 25: The Eagles won five straight matches between 165 and 285, with four pins, to close out the North victory.
Winning by pin for Smyrna were Wyatt Miller (120), Jesse Dixon (150), Jose Washington (165), Teagan Gratkowski (175), Kael Howell (190) and Chijioke Eule (285).
The Ravens got pins from Colin Mohr (132) and Ryan Cooper (157).
Sussex Central 71, Dover 9: The Golden Knights finished with nine pins in the Henlopen North victory.
Winning by fall for Central, which stayed unbeaten in the North, were Austen Decker (106), Evan Cordrey (126), Talan Savage (132), John Rovillard (138), Jayden Drummond (150), Cody Layfield (157), Jadyn Craig (165), Gabe Cannon (175) and Ivan Neal (190).
The Senators got a pin from Jamar Harris (285).
Lake Forest 47, Indian River 27: The Spartans put up seven pins in winning the Henlopen South showdown.
Lake Forest’s win by fall came from Demarion Russ (120), Trevor Silver (126), DeMarcus Russ (132), Case Dempsey (144), Nurrideen Ahmed-Statts (157), Clay Rosebrooks (190) and Cullen Parsell (215).
The Indians answered with four pins, getting falls from Samuel Lopez Mendiola (106), Amani Marsiglia (113), Angel Mora Salas (150) and Jayvion Chandler (165).
Boys’ basketball
Laurel 85, Woodbridge 64: Dontarius Jones oured in 31 points as the Bulldogs (6-0 South, 8-2 overall) stayed unbeaten in the South.
Laurel hosts Seaford on Thursday at 5:45 p.m. in a showdown of teams that are both unbeaten in the division.
Kylse Wilson (19), Joel Parker (12), Tyronn Kane (11) and Corey Mumford (10) also paced Laurel, which led 41-20 at halftime.
Jeremy Fletcher (15), Bruce Mosley (14), Isaiah Giles (10) and Traci Johnson (10) all finished in double digits for Woodbridge.
Sussex Central 50, Sussex Tech 39: The Golden Knights out-scored the Ravens, 26-7, in the fourth quarter to rally for the North win.
Jaron Cannon, who hit four three-pointers, scored 14 points with David Maker adding 10 for Central.
Milford 65, Smyrna 59: The Buccaneers raised their record to 6-5 with the North victory.
Lake Forest 65, Sussex Academy 15: The Spartans put up 33 first-quarter points in the South win.
Sophomore Darius Miller tallied 25 points for Lake Forest with Jaabir Robinson scoring 12.
Girls’ basketball
Smyrna 56, Milford 14: Kai Burnette (21 points) and Skylar Curley (17) both notched career highs for the Eagles in the North victory.
Smyrna (7-4) led 33-7 by halftime.
Early College 41, Delmar 39: The Hornets improved to 7-2 overall with the South win.
Lake Forest 49, Sussex Academy 8: The Spartans snapped a five-game losing streak with the South victory.
Woodbridge 73, Laurel 9: The Blue Raiders netted 18 unanswered points in the first half before picking up the Henlopen South win.
Woodbridge was led by Reghan Robinson (17 points, 7 assists, 4 steals), Payton Keeler (15 points, 7 steals) and De’Asya Jones (11 points, 4 assists, 4 steals).
Sussex Tech 51, Sussex Central 47: The Ravens ended the game on a 16-9 run to pull out the North victory.
Maleyah Bell netted 22 points, going 10-for-13, from the foul line for Sussex Tech. Alyssa Kellam added 11 points.
Takyla Davis (19) and Blair Darmstadter (10) paced the Golden Knights.
Indian River 48, Seaford 18: The Indians used a 17-1 run in the third quarter to put the contest out of reach.
Delmarva Christian 47, Salisbury School 19: Ainsley Bell (21 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, 3 blocks) led the unbeaten Royals (9-0) to the win.
Journey Handy (10 points, 3 blocks) also scored in double figures for Delmarva Christian.
Football
Friends named state’s top team: The Wilmington Friends football squad has been named the state Team of the Year for 2022 by the Delaware Sportswriters & Broadcasters Association.
The Quakers finished the season 13-0 after winning the DIAA Class 2A state championship. It was only the second state title that Friends has won in the sport and its first since 1984.
In going undefeated, the Quakers posted four shutouts, averaging 33.8 points per game while giving up only 6.0.
The Quakers and other award winners will be honored at the DSBA’s 74th annual luncheon on Feb. 20 at a site TBA.
Tennis
Brengle falls in Aussie: Madison Brengle dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to fellow American Claire Liu in the first round of the Australian Open women’s singles draw on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old Liu is ranked No. 62 in the world while Dover native Brengle is No. 72. The 32-year-old Brengle is now 1-2 all-time vs. Liu.
For her career, Brengle is 8-11 at the Australian Open and 22-37 in Grand Slam matches.
