Local roundup: Caesar Rodney girls get North win; Cape Henlopen goes 14-0 in North

Caesar Rodney High downed Sussex Tech, 42-35, in Henlopen North girls’ basketball on Thursday night.

The Riders won three of their last four games to finish the season with a record of 8-12.

The Ravens close the regular season with a record of 12-8.

Cape Henlopen 61, Smyrna 44: The Vikings led 21-9 after the first quarter before finishing their Henlopen North schedule at 14-0.

It’s the fourth straight season that Cape Henlopen has finished unbeaten in the North. The Vikings have won 59 straight North games since 2019.

Mya Maull tallied a game-high 20 points for the Vikings (18-2 overall), who were also paced by Faith Re (17 points, 4 assists) and Amalia Frutchman (12 points, seven rebounds, five blocks).

The Eagles were led by Jayde Rivera (17) and Talaney Pierce (11).

Woodbridge 79, Indian River 14: The Blue Raiders finished a perfect 14-0 in the South with the win.

Payton Keeler (13), De’Asya Jones (11) and Iyanna Mims (11) all reached double figures for Woodbridge, which had 11 players score in the contest.

Dover 53, Sussex Central 34: The Senators built a 45-19 advantage after three quarters before picking up the North win.

Lake Forest 40, Delmar 35: The Spartans finished their season with a record of 8-12 after posting their second win in a row.

Kirja Hickman scored 14 points for Lake Forest with Breanna Johnson adding 12.

Laurel 54, Sussex Academy 25: Carlie Venables netted 30 points for the Bulldogs, who led by only two before out-scoring the Seahawks, 17-6, in the second quarter.

Laurel, which also got 11 points from Bailey Ullman, has won four of its last five games to finish the regular season at 10-10. Venables hit six three-pointers.

Polytech 51, Milford 23: The Panthers improved to 14-5 with the North victory.
Kallie Hopkins (15 points, 14 rebounds) had a double-double for Polytech with Sky Naranjo adding nine points and 16 rebounds.

Boys’ basketball

Dover 71, Sussex Central 42: The Senators out-scored the Golden Knights, 17-5, in the fourth quarter to close out the North win in their regular-season finale.
Jaheim Harrell netted 19 points with Denim Perkins adding 15 for Dover.

Eleven players scored in the game for the Senators.

The Golden Knights got 15 points from Clarence McBride-Allen and 12 from Jameel Watson.

Cape Henlopen 84, Smyrna 63: The Vikings scored 30 first-quarter points en route to the North victory.

Drew Zimmerman (19), Trey Leggins (14) and Tyrone Tolson (11) all scored in double figures for Cape Henlopen, which sank 12 three-pointers in the contest.

Obinna Coleman (17), Marice Kilgoe (12) and Chase Sullivan (11) paced Smyrna.

Caesar Rodney 61, Sussex Tech 59: The Riders out-scored the Ravens, 4-2, in overtime to earn the North win and finish the season at 9-11.

Steven Smith scored 24 points with Khalil Kemp adding 20 as CR won its third game in a row.

Kyle Thompson had 19 points for Sussex Tech.

Indian River 67, Woodbridge 56: The Indians were only up by one at halftime before out-scoring the Bue Raiders, 23-12, in the third quarter.

Brendon Bradford and Jamaal Jones netted 17 points apiece for IR with Jamison Bender adding 14.

Ci-Atrick Stones led Woodbridge with 15 while Traci Johnson and Bruce Mosley had 11 each.

Lake Forest 48, Delmar 36: A 17-9 run in the second quarter helped the Spartans to the South win.

Darius Miller finished with 24 points for Lake Forest.

Emmanuel Ortiz Villaman (14) and Patcharadanai Suha (10) led the Wildcats.

Wrestling

St. Mark’s 42, Laurel 34: The fourth-seeded Spartans registered a pin and a decision in the last two matches to rally past the No. 5 Bulldogs in the DIAA Division II state quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

Henlopen South champion Laurel held a 34-33 advantage after a second-period pin from Xavier Limehouse (150) capped a run of three straight pins.

Also winning by fall for the Bulldogs were Brayden Hearn (215), Ian Messick (113), Landen Messick (138) and Stanley Pete (144).

College

Men’s basketball

Towson 95, Delaware 72: The Tigers shot a red-hot 72.7 percent from three-point range to hand the Blue Hens the CAA road loss on Thursday night.

The Tigers improved to 10-5 in the CAA, 18-10 overall while Delaware fell to 5-10 in the CAA, 13-15 overall.

In one second-half stretch, Towson made 14 straight field-goal attempts. Nicolas Timberlake finished with a game-high 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting, going 7-of-10 from three-point range.

As a team, the Tigers were 16-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Four Blue Hens scored in double figures, led by Christian Ray and Cavan Reilly with 15 apiece. Reilly’s 15 tied his career high.

Jameer Nelson Jr. (12) and Jyáre Davis (10) also led the Hens.
