Local roundup: Caesar Rodney, Cape Henlopen, Sussex Central advance in wrestling

Third-seeded Caesar Rodney High won eight of nine individual matches in one stretch before posting a 44-24 victory over No. 6 Smyrna in the DIAA Division I dual-meet wrestling quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

CR’s second win over the Eagles this year sends the Riders (11-2) to Saturday’s semifinals at Smyrna. The Riders will face second-seeded Cape Henlopen at 4 p.m.

CR got only one pin in the match — a first-period fall from Owyn Meister (215). But the Riders got technical falls from Alex McEvoy (106) and Cameron Cataldi (157), a pair of forfeit victories and won 10 matches overall.

Smyrna (10-10) got pins from Kael Howell (190), Chijioke Eule (285), Tyree Heath (138) and Jose Washington (165).

Cape Henlopen 56, St. Georges Tech 9: The second-seeded Vikings won 12 of the 14 matches before rolling into Saturday’s Division I semifinals.

Defending state champion Cape Henlopen (17-4) had six pins, getting falls from Patrick Donahue (190), Nicolas Walker (132), Joshua Wright (138), Andrew Schaen (144), Luke Bender (157) and Jeffrey Rainier (165).

The Vikings get a rematch with No. 3 Caesar Rodney on Saturday. They beat the Riders, 39-33, on Dec. 14.

Sussex Central 62, Wilmington Charter 12: The top-seeded Golden Knights (21-0) remained unbeaten with the Division I quarterfinal victory.

Sussex Central will get a rematch with No. 4 Salesianum on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Smyrna in the state semifinals. The Sals beat No. 5 William Penn, 49-17, on Wednesday.

The Knights registered seven pins in Wednesday’s win. Winning by fall were Ryder Robinson (215), Austen Decker (106), Malachi Stratton (113), Chase Murray (120), Andrew Long (144), Cody Layfield (157) and Jadyn Craig (165).

Tower Hill 37, Lake Forest 36: The Spartans lost a heartbreaker to the No. 3 Hillers in the Division II quarterfinals.

A 9-8 decision by Lake Forest’s Shawn Ferrell (165) in the final individual bout evened the match at 36-36. But Tower Hill won on a tiebreaker on number of maximum-point wins, 5-4.

The Hillers, who had five pins, advance to the state semifinals on Saturday at Smyrna at 2 p.m.

The Spartans (9-8) won a pair of forfeits and also got pins from DeMarcus Russ (138) and Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts (157). Lake Forest tallied the final 13 points of the match to tie the score.

St. Mark’s 42, Laurel 34: The fourth-seeded Spartans registered a pin and a decision in the last two matches to rally past the No. 5 Bulldogs in the Division II quarterfinals.

Henlopen South champion Laurel held a 34-33 advantage after a second-period pin from Xavier Limehouse (150) capped a run of three straight pins.

Also winning by fall for the Bulldogs were Brayden Hearn (215), Ian Messick (113), Landen Messick (138) and Stanley Pete (144).

Girls’ basketball

Lake Forest 59, Laurel 37: The Spartans took a 21-9 lead to start the contest before picking up the South win.

Breanna Johnson (15), Kirja Hickman (15) and Saniya Johnson (10) all paced Lake Forest.

Carlie Venables tallied a game-high 19 points for the Bulldogs.

Sussex Tech 51, Seaford 40: The Ravens finished the game on a 19-12 run to top the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Amira Tingle netted 34 of Seaford’s 40 points.

Boys’ basketball

Delmarva Christian 69, Gunston 48: The Royals improved to 14-7 with the victory.

College

Men’s lacrosse

Delaware 15, Mount St. Mary’s 6: The No. 13 Blue Hens (2-0) picked up their second straight road win to start the season.

J.P. Ward netted four goals with Tye Kurtz and Cam Acchione adding three apiece for Delaware, which out-scored the Mountaineers 9-3 in the second half.

The Hens have won six of their last seven meetings with Mount St. Mary’s.

WOMEN, Delaware 16, Lafayette 12: The Blue Hens (2-0) jumped out to a 10-5 halftime lead befpre topping the Leopards.

Morgan Gore, Lizzie Hsu and Danielle Livornese netted three games apiece for Delaware.
