Local roundup: Caesar Rodney boys win again; Delaware men lose a tough one

Caesar Rodney High built a 17-point lead going into the fourth quarter before picking up a 66-50 Henlopen North win over Milford in boys’ basketball on Friday night.

Khalil Kemp (16 points), Anthony Aglio (13), Adam Bailey (11) and Isaiah Alston (14 rebounds) all paced CR, which won its second in a row.

Neysen Legros led the Buccaneers with 13 points.

Seaford 68, Laurel 63: The Blue Jays out-dueled the Bulldogs in a showdown for first place in the South on Thursday night.

Aviyon Matthews collected 25 points and 14 rebounds for Seaford.
Dontarius Jones tallied 24 points for the Bulldogs.

Girls’ basketball

Caesar Rodney 58, Milford 28: The Riders improved to 4-8 after winning their second game in a row.

St. Georges 61, Lake Forest 50: The Hawks jumped out to a 39-13 halftime lead before downing the Spartans.

Kirja Hickman had 16 points for Lake Forest while Breanna Johnson added 14.

Wrestling

Central takes Canal title: Sussex Central captured the team title at Middletown’s Canal Classic on Saturday.

The Golden Knights collected 333.5 points, to finish ahead of second-place Oxford, Pa. (298.5) and third-place Caravel (256.5).

Malachi Stratton (113) won an individual championship for Central.

Milford 37, Lake Forest 36: Jordan Curry (190 pounds) and Greg Lockett (215) posted back-to-back pins before the Buccaneers held on to edge the Spartans.

Milford picked up falls from Alexander Starkey (120) and Oliver Barnes (165).

Salesianum 44, Smyrna 17: The Sals won the first four individual bouts and the last four to post the iwn over the Eagles.

Tyree Heath (144) had a third-period pin for Smyrna in a match that featured only three of them.

Cape Henlopen 30, Delaware Military 25: Andrew Schaen (150) posted a major decision before Hayden Wheeler (157) followed with a decision in the final two bouts as the Vikings pulled out the win.

Cape Henlopen didn’t win any matches by pin but took nine of the 14 bouts. The Seahawks had three pins.

Tower Hill 42, Delmar 33: Kane Johnson (175) had a 52-second pin for the Wildcats in the loss.

Noman Ahmed (132) and Makhi Stroebel (144) also won by fall for Delmar.
Tower Hill 51, Sussex Academy 16: Gideon Sammons (120) picked up a pin in 40 seconds for the Seahawks in the setback. Kieran Diviny (132) also had a pin.

College basketball

MEN, Drexel 77, Delaware 74, OT: Jameer Nelson, Jr.’s heavily-contested three-pointer was off the mark just before the final buzzer as the Blue Hens fell in overtime.

Delaware (3-5 CAA, 11-10 overall) scored just one point in OT with the Dragons (5-2 CAA, 12-8 overall) netting just four in a game that was tied 73-73 at the end of regulation.

Jyáre Davis tallied a career-high 26 points while Nelson, Jr. had 21 after hitting several big shots in the closing minutes of regulation. The Hens also got a career-high 15 points from freshman Cavan Reilly, who sank five three-pointers.

North Carolina Central 74, Delaware State 55: Khyrie State (13 points), Raymond Somerville (12) and Jevin Muniz (11) led the Hornets in the MEAC loss.

DelState dropped to 0-4 in the MEAC, 1-16 overall.

WOMEN, Towson 69, Delaware 66: In a back-and-forth CAA game, the Blue Hens missed a three-pointer at the buzzer before falling to the Tigers.

Delaware (3-3 CAA, 10-7 overall) had a two-game winning streak snapped while Towson (4-2, 10-7) won its fourth game in a row. Nakiyah Mays-Prince paced the Hens with 12 points.

Former Caesar Rodney High standout Kylie Kornegay-Lucas had 14 points and six steals for Towson.

North Carolina Central 63, Delaware State 44: The Eagles ran out to a 33-10 lead before downing the Hornets.

Savannah Brooks and Joy Watkins had nine points apiece for DelState (1-3 MEAC, 3-12 overall).
