Local roundup: C-W tops Dover 16-1 in Senior League D-I softball opener

Camden-Wyoming rolled to a 16-1 win over Dover in the opening game of the Senior League softball District I Tournament on Wednesday night.

The two teams are both scheduled to play again tonight in the four-team, double-elimination tourney being held at Smyrna-Clayton.

Dover is slated to play at 6 p.m. with Camden-Wyoming following in the winners’ bracket game at 8:30 p.m. Smyrna-Clayton took on M.O.T. in the late game on Wednesday night.

Smyrna-Clayton is also hosting the state tournament in Senior League, starting on July 17.

Baseball

Senior League

Camden-Wyoming 7, Smyrna-Clayton 0: Colby Parenteau pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and only two walks in 6 2/3 innings as Camden-Wyoming reached the District I finals with the win on Wednesday night.

Camden-Wyoming (3-0) will play in the championship game on Friday at Milford at 7 p.m.

C-W led only 1-0 before scoring six runs in the fifth. Camden-Wyoming’s offense was led by Anthony Hatch (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI), Isaac Thomas (2-for-4), Daylen Aviles (1 hit, 1 RBI) and Josh Fredericks (1 hit, 1 RBI).

Smyrna-Clayton (1-1), which is slated to play in the losers’ bracket finals today at 7 p.m., got hits form James Tassone, Aaron Massey and Trey Hoisington.

Dover 10, M.O.T. 8: Reliever Elijah Ortiz-Williamson got the final out with the bases loaded as Dover stayed alive in the losers’ bracket on Tuesday night.

Winning pitcher Michael Grecco threw an eight-hitter and struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings. Offensively, Dover was paced by Brett Shelton-Hopkins (3 hits, 4 runs), Isaiah Husser (3 hits, 1 run), Cameron Griffin (2 runs), Grecco (2 runs) and Braden Usleton (3 RBI).

Cameron Crowe (3 hits) and Kyle Jones (2 hits) both scored twice for M.O.T.

Felton-Harrington 12, Milford 2: Felton-Harrington (2-1) earned another game in the losers’ bracket with the win on Tuesday night.

Pitchers Elijah Benton and Cole Miller struck out four batters apiece. Benton also went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI.

College basketball

Hens promote Phillips: Delaware men’s basketball head coach Martin Ingelsby has announced the promotion of Bill Phillips to associate head coach.

Phillips, who primarily works with the Blue Hen post players, arrived in Newark along with Ingelsby in the summer of 2016. He will begin his sixth season on the men’s basketball staff this fall.

Delaware has won 73 games during Phillips’ tenure, and increased its win total in each of his first four seasons. The Blue Hens also won a CAA Tournament game during his first four years, and advanced to the semifinals in both 2019 and 2020.

Phillips has played a crucial role in the development of forward Dylan Painter, who was a first team All-District, first-team All-CAA, and CAA All-Defensive Team pick this season while ranking sixth in the nation with 11.5 rebounds per game.

College lacrosse

DSU back in Atlantic Sun: The Delaware State women’s lacrosse program has rejoined the Atlantic Sun Conference as an affiliate member beginning with the 2022 season.

The Hornets competed in the ASUN in 2017 before playing in the Southern Conference the past four seasons.

Next season, six programs will compete for the ASUN championship title as Coastal Carolina and DSU join Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Liberty and Stetson.

Delaware State was 1-9 overall (0-3 Southern Conference) during its abbreviated 2021 season. The Hornets expect to return all but a handful of their 2021 letter winners, including top two scorers Gwenna Gentle (16 goals; 21 points) and Rosella Nardi (12 goals; 16 points).

College baseball

UD’s Baker earns another honor: Six-year Delaware baseball letterman Kyle Baker added another accolade to his long list after being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Baseball team.

Baker graduated in 2019 with a degree in finance before earning his MBA while finishing his career. He hit .335 during his time in Newark, was a three-time captain and helped the Blue Hens win their first-ever CAA Tournament championship in 2017.

The Hockessin native finished his undergraduate degree with a 3.46 GPA and a carried a 3.73 GPA through graduate school.

College equestrian

Hornets honored for academics: The Delaware State bowling team has been honored for its 3.43 grade point average by the National Tenpin Coaches Association.

In addition, DSU’s Ellyana Williams, Melissa Ortega, Stefanny Toala and Katie Robb have earned NTCA All-Academic honors. A student athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher for the academic school year to qualify for this award.

College triathlon

DSU adds another recruit: Delaware State has added Carmen Medina to its inaugural women’s triathlon team.

A native of Santiago, Chile, Medina is a member of the country’s national team.

Medina competed in the 2019 Rosario South American Beach Games, Montevideo CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon American Cup; and South American Championships/ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Lausanne. In addition, she participated in the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Gold Coast.
