Aydian Zimmerman collected three hits and five RBI as Milford High out-dueled Lake Forest, 12-8, in Henlopen Conference baseball on Friday afternoon.
The Buccaneers fell behind 3-0 early before battling back to score runs in each of the last five innings.
Thomas Leighty and Dale Osterman both had multiple hits as Milford finished with 13 hits in the contest. Winning pitcher Alex Mergner struck out eight over the first four innings.
Chase Killen, who had two hits, and Leighton Webb both doubled for the Spartans.
Sussex Tech 5, Smyrna 3: Jason Shockley drove home a pair of runs in the top of the seventh as the Ravens improved to 4-0 with the Henlopen North win.
Shockley also doubled and hit a two-run homerun in the fifth, finishing with all five Sussex Tech RBI. Conor Ellingsworth scored three runs.
A pinch-hit two-run double by the Eagles’ Derek Davis tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Smyrna pitcher Mason Drummond allowed only three hits and struck out seven in six innings.
Softball
Caesar Rodney 18, Polytech 2: The Riders erupted for 11 runs in the first inning before improving to 5-0.
Peyton Shields and Kayla Harvey combined to pitch a five-hitter for CR, which had 12 hits in the contest.
Sussex Central 7, Middletown 1: Mya Jones had three of the Golden Knights’ 10 hits in the non-conference victory.
Winning pitcher Madge Layfield threw a two-hitter and struck out 12.
Girls’ soccer
Smyrna 5, Sussex Tech 1: The Eagles tallied three unanswered goals as they improved to 3-1 on Thursday night.
Desiree Zapata scored twice for Smyrna with Hannah Osborne (1 assist), Kelly Barr and Kristin Keister adding the other goals.
College football
Wesley 23, Christopher Newport 7: Latrell McCants ran for a pair of touchdowns as the Wolverines rolled to the NJAC road win on Friday night.
Devin Curry caught a 15-yard scoring pass from quarterback Brady Walters and Deandre Davis kicked a 36-yard field goal for Wesley (2-1), which opened up a 23-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.
McCants, who scored on runs of two and 10 yards, finished with a game-high 91 yards on 16 carries. Walters completed 15-of-28 passes for 129 yards with no interceptions. The Wolverines out-gained the Captains, 283-246, in total yards.
Linebacker Jay Holmes (Caesar Rodney) recorded a game-high 10 tackles. John Monk and Darrin Matthews both forced fumbles.
Wesley plays its final game on Friday when it hosts Stevenson at 7 p.m.
College baseball
Delaware 12, Towson 0: Junior Chris Ludman allowed three hits in eight innings and struck out nine in the Blue Hens’ CAA win.
Kyle Baker went 3-for-5, with two RBI and two runs scored.
The 12-run margin was Delaware’s largest margin of victory in a CAA contest since 2017 and its largest CAA road win since 2009.
DelState drops two: Norfolk State bounced back from a loss in the series opener to take two from Delaware State 5-3 and 7-2, in a MEAC North doubleheader.
In the opener, John Weglarz was 2-for-4 with two runs RBI, while Miquel Rivera (Polytech) had two hits and an RBI.
Delaware State had seven hits in the nightcap as center fielder Mark Herron was 2-for-3.
College lacrosse
MEN, Delaware 16, Fairfield 11: The No. 12 Blue Hens overcame a three-goal halftime deficit to improve to 4-0 in the CAA, 7-1 overall.
With seven straight victories, Delaware has now posted the program’s longest regular-season win streak since the 2006 campaign, when the Hens opened the year with a 7-0 mark.
Mike Robinson scored five goals in the third quarter alone and finished the contest with a game-high seven to go along with an assist, four ground balls and a caused turnover.
Delaware, which out-scored the Stags 11-3 in the second half, also got three goals and three assists from Charlie Kitchen.
College volleyball
North Carolina A&T 3, Delaware State 2: The Hornets’ bid for their first appearance in the MEAC Tournament final since 2010 ended in heartbreak in the conference semifinals.
The teams were separated by just two points in the five sets, two of which were decided in extra play.
The Hornets trailed 2-0 in the match before storming back with wins in sets two and three to even the as the Aggies won, 28-26, 25-22, 34-36, 22-25, 15-13.
In the deciding fifth set, Delaware State led 4-0 and 7-2 before it was the Aggies’ turn to roar back to take the deciding set.
College softball
Wolverines win pair: Wesley College swept Neumann, 9-4 and 4-2, in a twinbill on Friday.
In the opener, Rachel Martinez went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored to pace Wesley’s 15-hit attack.
The Wolverines broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the fifth in the nightcap. Pitcher Shanyn Burch had two RBI in the game.
Morgan sweeps Hornets: Delaware State erased a 6-0 deficit, but never led in a 7-6 loss to Morgan State in game one of a MEAC North doubleheader. The Bears completed the doubleheader sweep with a 9-0 victory in game two.
