Local roundup: Bradford lifts Delmar past Cape in OT

Maci Bradford’s second goal of the game lifted Delmar High to a dramatic 2-1 overtime win over Cape Henlopen in the showdown of unbeaten field hockey teams on Thursday evening in Lewes.

The victory was the 86th in a row for the Wildcats (9-0 overall) and sixth straight over the Vikings. The two programs have combined to win the last 14 DIAA state championships.

Emma Duffield gave Cape a 1-0 lead in the second quarter before Bradford tied the game a minute later. The contest remained deadlocked until Bradford’s game winner at the 2:22 mark in OT.

Goalie Kelly Davis had 10 saves for the Wildcats, who finished with advantages of 25-12 in shots and 19-5 in corners.

Morgan Newcomb made 16 saves for the Vikings.

The two squads could meet again in the Henlopen Conference championship game if they win their respective divisions.

Milford 2, Lake Forest 0: Beau Davis and Bailey Masten both scored goals as the Buccaneers won their second game in a row.

Lila Mergner assisted on both goals for Milford, which out-shot the Spartans, 6-1.

Madison Lawson made four saves for Lake Forest.

Polytech 5, Laurel 0: The Panthers (5-3) tallied four fourth-quarter goals before posting their third shutout of the season.

Sussex Central 2, Indian River 1: Emma McIntosh’s third-quarter goal lifted the Golden Knights to the win over their intra-district rivals.

Bayleigh Perdue (1 assist) scored Central’s first goal while Kianna Kelley made 13 saves. Central out-shot the Indians, 15-14.

Kinsley Hall tied the game in the second quarter for IR with Caylee Schmidt making 13 saves. The Indians held an 11-6 edge in corners.

Caesar Rodney 10, Mt. Pleasant 0: The Riders earned their fifth shutout of the season in improving to 5-3.

Sussex Tech 1, Woodbridge 0: The Ravens used a second-quarter goal to raise their record to 7-2.

Smyrna 6, Caesar Rodney 1: Reese Nacrelli tallied three goals in the Eagles’ Henlopen North win on Wednesday.

Madison Simpson added two goals with London Bebout scoring the last goal for Smyrna, which finished with advantages of 20-3 in shots and 17-2 in corners.

Peyton Shields scored for the Riders, which got 11 saves from Bailey Minear.

Football

Woodbridge 6, Laurel 0: Freshman Lextyn Wescott pulled in an 85-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Seth Smart with just 5:18 remaining to keep the Blue Raiders (5-0) unbeaten.

Wescott caught the ball at the Woodbridge 40 and then out-ran a couple Bulldogs defenders the rest of the 60 yards. The TD came one play after Jordan Evans’ interception gave the Raiders the ball at their own 15.

It was the second straight game that Woodbridge won by a score of 6-0.

The loss was the first of the season for Laurel (4-1).

Polytech 20, Wilmington Charter 15: The Panthers (2-3) posted the Class 1A victory on Homecoming Thursday night.

Junior running back Brett Shelton Hoskins ran for all three touchdowns for Polytech, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

The Force fell to 3-2.

Seaford 62, Early College 8: The Blue Jays rolled to the Henlopen South win to improve to 3-1.

Boys’ soccer

Caravel 4, Sussex Academy 0: The Buccaneers scored twice in each half to hand the Seahawks (6-1) their first loss of the season.

Tyler Hudson made 10 saves for Sussex Academy as Caravel held advantages of 14-3 in shots and 9-0 in corner kicks.

Seaford 4, Sussex Tech 1: Brayan Perez Mendez netted a goal in each half to spark the Blue Jays to the win.

Isaias Morales Vidaurri and Carlos Rodriguez Lopez had the other goals for Seaford, which out-shot the Ravens, 10-5.

Sussex Tech’s William Vasquez-Escalante scored in the second half.

Milford 8, Odessa 1: Alexander Davis scored three goals while Brandon Zelaya Hernandez added two goals and three assists for the Buccaneers (6-3), who won their fifth in a row.

Delmar 8, Odyssey Charter 0: Mason Ball tallied three goals and Damian Kunie added two in the Wildcats’ non-conference win.

Worcester Prep, Md. 3, Sussex Central 0: The Golden Knights out-shot Worcester, 10-9, but gave up three second-half goals.

Volleyball

Sussex Central 3, Smyrna 2: The Golden Knights won the last two games to pull out a 25-14, 17-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-8 Henlopen North victory.

Leading Smyrna were Anna Richardson (23 kills, 1 ace), Mia Schultz (7 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks), Karolyn Osborne (32 assists) and Carly Timblin (15 digs).

Dover 3, Cape Henlopen 0: The Senators downed the Vikings, 25-11, 25-23, 25-21, to improve to 4-0 in the Henlopen North.

Kendra Williams (16 kills), Kimberly Czepukaitis (15 kills, 5 aces), Elizabeth Baughman (4 kills, 2 aces, 14 digs) and Olivia Anyanwu (4 kills, 44 assists) all led Dover.

Rileigh Wilson had seven kills for Cape Henlopen with Megan Smith collecting 24 assists.

Delmarva 3, Indian River 1: The Royals (8-2) made it eight wins in the 25-6, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19 victory.

Sierra Troyer (12 kills, 3 aces, 14 digs) and Elaina Millaway (11 kills, 5 aces, 8 blocks, 16 digs) paced Delmarva Christian with Tessa Kwiatkowski contributing 18 assists and Makayla Heinrichs adding 13.

Caesar Rodney 3, Polytech 1: The Riders won the first two sets before posting the 25-15, 25-19, 24-26, 25-14 Henlopen North victory.

Leading CR were Melissa Eddy (23 kills, 12 digs), Alexandra Mardesich (17 kills, 4 aces, 17 digs), Gabrielle Davis (4 aces, 30 assists, 12 digs), Kaitlyn Hand (37 digs) and Makenna Diem (21 digs).

Lake Forest 3, Early College 0: The Spartans improved to 5-0 in the Henlopen South win the 25-1, 25-2, 25-10 victory.

Sussex Academy 3, Delmar 0: The Seahawks improved to 2-0 in the South, 3-5 overall with the win.

College soccer

WOMEN, UMBC 5, Delaware State 1: The Hornets netted the game’s first goal but the Retrievers took control after that.

Savannah Ay scored in the first three minutes for DSU (1-10) while Ashley Maribo made three saves.

Hofstra 4, Delaware 0: The Blue Hens dropped the CAA decision on Thursday night.

Lauren Krinsky had nine saves for Delaware (1-1-1 CAA, 4-7-1), which surrendered a season-high 31 shots.
