U.S. Southwest champion Texas erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally for an 8-3 victory over host Lower Sussex on the second day of the Senior League softball World Series on Tuesday night.
Lower Sussex dropped to 1-1 in pool play in the tournament in Little League’s age division for 14-16 year olds.
The contest was scoreless before Lower Sussex put up three runs in the top of the third inning.
A single to centerfield by Jaya Shaub scored both Sophie Scurci and Lily Hoban to give Lower Sussex a 3-0 advantage. Kinsely Hall also scored in the inning as the host team sent eight batters to the plate.
But Texas (2-0) answered back with a run in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings to cut the Lower Sussex lead down to 3-2. Then, in the fifth, Texas bunched together five hits to put up its big inning.
Lower Sussex also committed three of its five errors in the inning as Texas sent 11 batters to the plate. Texas out-hit Lower Sussex, 8-3.
Lower Sussex returns to action on Wednesday with an 8 p.m. contest against Latin America, which is 0-2 in the tourney. The Latin America squad is from Willemstad, Curacao.
Asia Pacific 9, Camden-Wyoming 0: Asia Pacific took control early before downing Camden-Wyoming on Tuesday hight.
U.S. East champion Camden-Wyoming dropped to 0-2 in the tournament.
Asia Pacific, from Bacolod City, Philippines, scored three runs in both the first and second innings to open up an early 6-0 advantage.
After getting no hit by Lower Sussex on Monday, Camden-Wyoming did collect five hits in Tuesday’s setback. Ciara Maldonado, who doubled, and Amiya Carpenter both had two hits with Amy Gaddis adding the other.
Asia Pacific finished with 12 hits and scored in four of the six innings.
Camden-Wyoming has the day off on Wednesday before playing twice on Thursday. The Kent County squad faces U.S. Southwest at 5:30 p.m. and then turns around to take on Latin America at 8 p.m.
8-10 Eastern Regional
MOT 6, Maryland 3: The Delaware state champions improved to 2-0 with the victory on Tuesday.
The Middletown-area all-stars play again on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the winners’ bracket of the tournament being played in Pittston. Pa.
On Tuesday, MOT jumped out to a 4-0 advantage after two innings. Starting pitcher Brynleigh Bennett struck out six in 2.1 innings before Aubrey Martin finished the game, striking out 10 0 runs in 3.2 shutout innings.
Ella Austin, Molly Frantz, Grace Overby and Kaelyn Berich all had hits for MOT. Austin, who homered, Gia Gambino, Bennett, and Berich all had RBI.
