Local roundup: Blue Raiders, Seahawks advance in field hockey tourney

Ninth-seeded Woodbridge High knocked off No. 8 Lake Forest, 2-1, in the opening round of the DIAA Division II field hockey state tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

The Henlopen South rivals had tied, 2-2, on Nov. 1 in their regular-season matchup.

Woodbridge (10-4-1) moves onto a quarterfinal matchup at top-seeded Delmar (16-0) on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Raiders fell to the Wildcats, 11-0, two weeks ago.

Lake Forest ends the season at 10-5-1.

Sussex Academy 5, St. Mark’s 0: The seventh-seeded Seahawks tallied three first-half goals before blanking the No. 10 Spartans.

Sussex Academy next plays at No. 2 Archmere (13-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Division II sttae quarterfinals.

Boys’ soccer
Delaware Military 2, Sussex Academy 0: Sixth-seeded DMA netted a pair of first-half goals before topping No. 11 Sussex Academy in the opening round of the DIAA Division II state tournament on Tuesday night.

DMA (9-5-2) next plays at third-seeded St. Mark’s on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Carter Norton made six saves for Sussex Academy (6-8-2). Both teams took eight shots while DMA held a 4-1 edge in corners.

College field hockey

Delaware 4, Lehigh 0: Four different players scored goals as the CAA champion Blue Hens won the the NCAA Division I Tournament play-in game on Wednesday.

Delaware moves on to face top-seeded North Carolina on the Tar Heels’ home field on Friday at noon.

On Wednesday, the Hens (10-11) scored twice in both the first and third quarters before winning their third game in a row. They are 9-3 in their last 12 games.

Julia Duffhuis, Siam Emslie, Lia Becker and Genevieve Johnson all scored goals for Delaware, which out-shot the Patriot League champion Mountain Hawks, 16-10.

Lizzie Gaebel made five saves for the Hens. It was the eighth shutout of her career.

College basketball

WOMEN, Michigan 83, Delaware State 30: The No. 25 Wolverines out-scored the Hornets, 43-12, in the second half in cruising to the victory.

Freshman guard Deyonce Thompson led the Hornets (0-2) with 15 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the field. She knocked down a team-high three three-pointers.

Brishonne Tollie and Sydney Watkins chipped in with six points each.

College softball

Blue Hens sign six: The Delaware softball team added six newcomers to the program on Wednesday as part of National Signing Day.

The class included a pair of in-state players in Caravel outfielder Veronica Diomede and St. Mark’s pitcher Ryleigh Thomas.

Diomede was named first-team All-State as a shortstop as both a sophomore and a junior. Thomas earned Premier Girls Fastpitch All-America honors in 2021, hit nine home runs as a sophomore and batted .585 with five home runs as a junior.
