Local roundup: Blue Hens shock Irish in ninth; UD women lose a heartbreaker

The Delaware baseball team couldn’t have dreamed up a better way to give coach Jim Sherman his 800th career win.

Leftfielder Aidan Kane drilled a walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Blue Hens posted a dramatic 5-4 win over fourth-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday morning during the final day of the Hatter Classic in DeLand, Fla.

“The 800 wins is a test of time in this business,” said Sherman, who is retiring at the end of the season. “I owe it all to the players and coaches that have been part of this great journey. The walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth against a nationally-ranked team like Notre Dame was extra special.”

Delaware (1-2) trailed 4-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth, before Joseph Carpenter worked a bases-loaded walk and Kane drove home the tying run on a fielder’s choice.

Blue Hen reliever Zach Klapak then tossed three hitless innings in his UD debut, setting up Kane’s heroics in the bottom of the ninth. With one away he belted a pitch from Notre Dame’s Caden Aoki over the rightfield fence, setting off the UD celebration.

Kane finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while the homer was his fourth career longball as a Blue Hen. Jake Dunion and J.J. Freeman also recorded a pair of hits.

UD starting pitcher Joey Silan allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in six innings of work, before Klapak only allowed three walks during the final three frames to pick up the victory.

WOMEN, Drexel 65, Delaware 64: The Blue Hens overcame a 15-point, third-quarter deficit to take the lead in the closing minutes only to fall to the rival Dragons in the end.

After trailing 47-32, Delaware took its first lead of the CAA contest at 61-59 on a basket from Jasmine Dickey with 4:01 remaining. The Hens then went up by three.

But the Dragons answered with a 6-0 run to take the lead back for good.

A pair of Dickey free throws with eight seconds left got Delaware within one. Drexel then missed two foul shots.

However, Tee Johnson’s three-pointer from the corner just before the final buzzer bounced off the rim.

The victory all but clinches the CAA regular-season title for Drexel (13-1 CAA, 21-3 overall), which swept both games from the Hens (12-2 CAA, 18-6 overall) this winter and has won three in a row in the rivalry.

Drexel got a game-high 32 points from guard Keishana Washington.

Dickey (22 points, 10 rebounds, three steals), Ty Battle (19 points, 12 rebounds) and Tyi Skinner (11 points) paced Delaware, which had an eight-game winning streak snapped.

“Our team never hung our heads when we got down and we marched back,” said Delaware coach Natasha Adair. “That is the fight of this team. The good thing is this isn’t March but we are building to it. There are things that we can take from this game and continue to get better and improve on. The fight and the resiliency of this group, I will take all day.”

College softball

Delaware 9, Boston U. 1: The Blue Hens finished with 13 hits, including three home runs, in the victory at the Red and Black Showcase at Georgia.

Hanna Garber led Delaware (5-4) going 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs, and scored four times. Morgan Olynyk had two hits, including her first homer in a Delaware uniform, and drove in two.

Brittney Mendoza also was on base three times with a single, double and a walk.
