UNC-Wilmington scored a run in the top of the 11th inning to hand Delaware a tough 6-5 loss in CAA baseball at Bob Hannah Stadium on Friday night.
The Seahawks (7-3 CAA, 22-14 overall) had only one hit in the 11th but strung together three walks, including one intentional, to bring in the deciding run.
Delaware got one runner on base in the bottom of the 11th before falling short.
The two programs were playing for the first time since 2019 because of the COVID pandemic.
In a back-and-forth contest, the Seahawks took a 5-3 lead with four runs in the top of the seventh. But the Hens (5-5 CAA, 21-15 overall) tied the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Delaware had a chance to win it in the ninth. After a walk by Jordan Hutchins (Dover), a single from Bryce Greenly (Milford) put runners on first and third with only one out.
But J.J. Freeman followed with a line drive to shortstop that UNCW turned into an inning-ending double play.
The Hens held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 earlier in the contest.
Delaware had won six of its last nine meetings with UNCW before Friday.
The two squads combined for 20 hits in Friday’s game. Aidan Kane went 3-for-5 for the Hens.
Coppin St. 4, Delaware State 2: The Eagles scored twice in the top of the ninth to break a tie and win the opener of the four-game series between MEAC co-leaders.
The contest had been tied, 2-2, since the bottom of the fifth. The Hornets (11-10 MEAC, 14-17 overall) knotted the score when Trey Paige singled and was doubled home by Krew Bouldin.
DelState took a 1-0 lead in the second when Robert Trujillo’s double down the left-field line scored Alec Rodriguez (Dover), who had singled.
Coppin State scored its other two runs in the top of the fifth. In the ninth, the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs when Sebastien Sarabia’s single to right brought home a pair of runs.
DSU’s first two pitchers, Peter Carrea and Mike Carrington (Dover), gave up only two runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Paige and Rodriguez had two hits each for the Hornets.
Baseball
Woodbridge 9, Laurel 5: Seth Smart allowed just five hits and struck out 11 over six innings in the Blue Raiders’ Henlopen South victory.
Woodbridge got two RBI each from Sam Schroeder and Lextyn Wescott as it capped off the win with five runs in the sixth.
Bulldogs’ pitcher Timothy Jones allowing just two hits and struck out six in five innings. He also had two hits
Damin Smith added two hits and a pair of RBI.
Red Lion Christian 8, First State Military 3: Red Lion used a four-run second to overcome an early 3-0 deficit in its win over the Bulldogs.
Jayson Caldwell hit a two-run home run in the second for First State Military.
Softball
Indian River 10, North Caroline, Md. 0: The Indians improved to 6-3 by posting their third win in a row.
The shutout was also IR’s third in the last six games.
Boys’ lacrosse
Sussex Tech 13, Newark Charter 7: The Ravens evened their record at 4-4 with the non-conference victory.
