Three Delaware players registered double-doubles as Delaware put away an 87-65 victory at Elon in CAA women’s basketball on Sunday.
Jasmine Dicky (27 points, 10 rebounds), Ty Battle (12 points, 15 rebounds) and Makayla Pippin (11 points, 14 rebounds) all finished with double-doubles as the Blue Hens (7-1 CAA, 13-5 overall) won their third game in five days.
Jewel Smalls (14 points), who sank 4-of-7 three-pointers, gave Delaware a fourth double-digit scorer.
“Different people stepped up tonight,” said UD coach Natasha Addair. “We do it as a team, we do it as a family, we do it with defense and we have a whole lot of fun. Three-and-O that was the goal and we finished the job and now we are on our way home happy.”
Smalls hit a three just before the halftime buzzer, sending Delaware into the break with a 14-point lead, 41-27. The Blue Hens saw their lead balloon to a game-high 24 points twice in the second half,
The Hens finished with a season-high 59 rebounds compared to 31 for the Phoenix (2-5 CAA, 10-7 overall).
Dickey became the fifth player in Delaware history to score 1,600 career points. Battle picked up her 12th double-double on the season.
MEN, Morgan State 82, Delaware State 70: The Hornets led by as many as eight points in the first half and by three at the break, but faltered in the final 20 minutes on Sunday.
The loss overshadowed a record-setting performance by Hornet 7-foot-3 center Chris Sodom, who blocked nine shots, the most in a game in team history. The previous record was eight, most recently by Kendall Gray during the 2014-15 season.
Sodom also tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds for the Hornets (0-4 MEAC, 2-15 overall).
Myles Carter led DSU with a game-high 24 points, one short of his season high. Dominik Fragala came off the bench to add 15 points for Delaware State.
Freshman guard Corey Perkins also came off the bench to chip in 11 points and led the Hornets with four assists.
DSU game postponed: The Delaware State vs. Coppin State men’s basketball contest scheduled for Monday evening was postponed due the bomb threat on DSU’s campus.
The MEAC contest has been rescheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., following the 5:30 p.m. Hornets’ women’s game against Coppin State.
Due to University Covid health & safety protocols, spectators are not permitted to attend Delaware State home sporting events until further notice.
Hens’ Davis honored: Delaware freshman forward Jyare Davis has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week.
Davis averaged 14.5 points and 4.0 rebounds during the Blue Hens’ two official games last week while shooting 13 of 17 from the field. The Newark native scored a career-high 22 points during Saturday’s win at James Madison, going 10 of 14 from the field, grabbing a career-best seven rebounds, and leading UD with a career-high six assists.
