Local roundup: Blue Hen women win CAA opener; Caravel tops Sanford for state title

PHILADELPHIA — The first team All-CAA duo of Ty Battle and Jasmine Dickey combined for 45 of the Blue Hens’ 61 points to lift second-seeded Delaware to a 61-35 win over seventh-seeded William & Mary in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Tournament on Friday evening.

Delaware (22-7) will face No. 3 Towson in Saturday’s semifinals at 3:30 p.m.

Dickey led the Blue Hens with 29 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double in the past six games. Battle also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, marking her 21st of the season.

“The beauty of our team is that they respond,” said UD coach Natasha Adair. “We talked to them at halftime that we are going to do it on defensive end. Our formula is defend, rebound, run and score.

“I’m just proud of how hard we fought, their grit and their toughness. This time of year, you win, and you advance and that was the goal.”

After a defensive battle in the first half, the Blue Hens outscored William & Mary 18-4 through the first 5:30 of the fourth quarter, including an 8-0 run to open the period. It pushed the Delaware lead to 53-30 after entering the quarter with a nine-point advantage.

Delaware went on to end the game on a 6-0 run, outscoring the Tribe 26-9 over the final quarter.

The Tribe closed to within two midway through the third quarter before the Hens ran off five straight points.

Delaware led only 22-18 at halftime after William & Mary netted the final five points of the second quarter.

The Hens forced William & Mary into 21 turnovers, capitalizing with 22 points compared to just four points for the Tribe off turnovers.
