Local roundup: Asamoah, Davis spark Blue Hens to win over JMU

Posted

When he walked off the court Thursday night, his left foot in a walking boot, Ebby Asamoah hardly looked like a player ready to have the best game of his career.

But the Delaware junior guard shook off a sprained ankle and poured in 30 points on Saturday afternoon.

Asamoah’s big day helped the Blue Hens pull away to an impressive 85-69 victory over James Madison in a CAA men’s basketball matchup at Atlantic Union Bank Center in Harrisonburg, Va.

Playing without injured center Dylan Painter, Delaware (6-3 CAA, 15-7 overall) also got a career day from freshman forward Jyare Davis. The former Sanford School standout netted 22 points as he and Asamoah combined to hit 18-of-25 shots from the floor.

“It was a next-man-up mentality,” said Delaware coach Martin Ingelsby. “Ebby and Jyare were fabulous. That’s the Jyare Davis that we’ve seen (in practice). His confidence is at an all-time high right now.

“And you can’t say enough about Ebby. He’s a warrior. I knew he was going to be able to play. I didn’t know he’d be able to drop 30 in a game like that. This is a big-time team win for us.”

The Hens were coming off Thursday’s unfinished contest at Towson, where the game was suspended early in the second half because of the floor conditions. They lost both Painter and Asamoah to injuries in the game.

Asamoah, who was still in his walking boot on Saturday morning, was healthy enough to start and play 28 minutes at JMU. He hit 6-of-9 three-pointers and all eight of his foul shots.

Asamoah credited UD trainer Paul Lowery for getting him ready to play.

“Both of us agreed that I was good enough to play — or at least try,” said Asamoah. “Usually when the first one (three) is all net like I had, I know it’s time to go. Yeah, I was feeling good.

“I’ve got to give credit to my teammates. They definitely found me in rhythm. That was a big help.”

Delaware finished with 21 assists against only nine turnovers. Andrew Carr and Davis had six assists apiece.

After opening up a 43-34 halftime advantage. the Hens led by as many as 16 points in the second half. The Dukes (3-5 CAA, 12-7 overall) were able to cut that lead to as few as seven points only to have Delaware answer with a 10-0 run to take back control.

The Hens went up by as many as 17 points in the closing minutes.

Delaware has won eight of its last nine meetings with the Dukes, who are leaving the CAA after the season to in the Sunbelt Conference. JMU does have an upset of Virginia this season.
