It’s been over three decades since Lake Forest High won the Henlopen South title in girls’ basketball.
But the Spartans put themselves in position to capture the crown by downing Woodbridge, 58-48, in their South showdown on Tuesday night.
Lake Forest’s student section rushed onto the court to celebrate with the players after the Spartans’ first win over the Blue Raiders since 2017.
The victory leaves the Spartans 12-1 in the South, 16-3 overall. Lake Forest will clinch the division championship if it wins a 4 p.m. game at Delmar on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in its regular-season finale.
The Spartans last won the South in 1989 when they took their fifth division title. The South champion will face North winner Cape Henlopen in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dover.
Four-time defending division champion Woodbridge (12-2 South, 14-6 overall) had its 62-game South winning streak snapped by Seaford on Feb. 15.
In Tuesday’s contest, Lake Forest led only 47-44 when the Blue Raiders’
Reghan Robinson (26 points) hit her fifth three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter. But the Spartans answered with an 8-0 run to stretch their lead to 55-44 and put the game out of reach.
Woodbridge, which also got 12 points from Payton Keeler, led 33-25 at halftime before Lake Forest out-scored the Blue Raiders, 33-15, in the second half.
Gabrielle Almonte tallied a game-high 29 points for the Spartans with Kirja Hickman adding 11.
Caesar Rodney 62, Sussex Tech 52: The Riders opened the game on a 16-3 run before closing out the victory.
Stacey Deputy scored 28 points with Teri Bell adding 18 for CR. Deputy went 10-of-12 from the foul line as the Riders hit 20-of-32 free throws.
Maleyah Bell scored 15 points for the Ravens while Akira Perry finished with 14, including four three-pointers. Justice Smack had 13.
St. Mark’s 43, Polytech 21: The Panthers led by two after the first quarter before being out-scored, 37-13, the rest of the contest.
Kallie Hopkins scored a game-high 15 points for Polytech after hitting a pair of three-pointers and 7-of-10 free throws.
Boys’ basketball
Delmarva Christian 70, Lake Forest 53: Dontarius Jones netted 21 points as the Royals finished the regular season with a record of 15-6.
Gabe Herling (16), Loubens Fleurima (14) and Carter Breasure (11) also finished in doule figures for the Royals.
The Spartans got 20 points from Jackson Starkey and 10 from Calif Spencer. Starkey sank five three-pointers.
Caesar Rodney 54, Milford 50: The Riders out-scored the Buccaneers, 29-22, in the second half to finish the regular season at 12-8.
Senior Craig Williams netted a game-high 16 points as eight CR players scored in the Henlopen North game.
Chancler Johnson led the Buccaneers with 11.
Delmar 45, Early College 42: The Wildcats finished the regular season with a record of 12-7 after posting the Henlopen South win.
North Caroline 54, Lake Forest 53: The Spartans out-scored North Caroline by four points in the second half before falling short on Monday night.
Sussex Central 71, Odyssey Charter 41: Erik Vandercapellen (17 points), Garrett Statler (16) and Jalil LaSalle (12) all reached double figures in the Golden Knights’ win on Monday.
Sussex Central led by 28 points going into the fourth quarter.
Wrestling
Eight from Henlopen seeded No. 1: Eight Henlopen Conference wrestlers will go into this weekend’s DIAA individual wrestling state tournament as the top seed in their weight class.
The tourney starts on Friday and concludes on Saturday at Cape Henlopen.
Division II state champion Caravel has the most No. 1 seeds with four while Cape Henlopen and Sussex Central have two apiece.
The downstate No. 1 seeds all won Henlopen Conference titles this past weekend and represent six different schools.
The downstate No. 1 seeds are Cape Henlopen’s Mikey Frederick (145 pounds) and Dalton Deevey (220); Sussex Central’s Malachi Stratton (106) and Josh Negron (182); Smyrna’s Gabe Giampietro (120), Milford’s Jack Thode (132), Lake Forest’s Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts (152) and Indian River’s T.J. Burke (285).
The rest of the top seeds are Caravel’s Eddi Radecki (113), Luke Poore (126), Alex Poore (160), Nicholas Hall (170); William Penn’s Daniel Sinclair (138) and Salesianum’s Jack Agresti (195).
College lacrosse
MEN, Duke 19, Delaware 14: The No. 17 Blue Hens fell behind 8-3 to start the game before playing the seventh-ranked Blue Devils even the rest of the way in the loss on Tuesday afternoon.
Delaware (3-1) actually led 1-0 when Tye Kurtz scored the game’s first goal at the 13:21 mark. But Duke tied it 11 seconds later to start a three-goal run that gave the Blue Devils the lead for good.
The Hens still trailed only 14-12 before Duke ran off the first three goals of the fourth quarter. The two teams traded goals from there.
Both J.P. Ward and Kurtz finished with four goals each for Delaware. Goalie Matt Kilkeary collected 11 saves and one ground ball.
College basketball
DSU’s Carter honored by MEAC: Delaware State guard Myles Carter has been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Co-Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Carter, who shares this week’s award with Norfolk State’s Joe Bryant, Jr. tallied 49 points, 17 rebounds and five assists in two games last week. He recorded his second double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds vs. North Carolina Central on Feb. 19.
For the season, Carter is third in the MEAC in scoring at 16.1 ppg, seventh in rebounding (5.9) and tops in minutes played (34.0).
Hens’ Davis makes it four in a row: Delaware freshman forward Jyare Davis earned his fourth consecutive Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week award.
Davis ranked second on the Blue Hens with 13.7 points and led UD with 9.3 rebounds during the team’s three wins last week. After reaching double figures in just one of his first 17 games, he has scored in double digits in each of the last seven contests, averaging 14.7 points in that stretch.
Davis, who went 16 of 26 from the field last week, is shooting 66.2 percent over his last nine games.
