Local high school roundup: Johnson’s 2nd homer of game lifts Cape past Middletown 4-3

Luke Johnson smacked a pair of homeruns, including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Cape Henlopen High edged Middletown, 4-3, in non-conference baseball on Saturday.

Johnson went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Vikings (4-2) while Robbie Baxley also had a pair of hits and scored a run.

Starting pitcher Mason Fluharty allowed only one earned run and struck out 12 before Sean Clendaniel threw two scoreless innings to earn the win.

The Cavaliers, who got eight strikeouts in six innings from Alex Reedy, tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the sixth.

St. Mark’s 6, Indian River 5: The Spartans broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth.

IR’s Grant Argo tied the game with a two-run double in the fourth. The Indians rallied for a run in the bottom of the sixth before falling short.

Delmarva Christian 7, Sussex Academy 2: The Royals (5-1) broke open a 1-1 game with a five-run fourth.

Joseph Jones, who had multiple hits, drove in the go-ahead run while pitcher Benjamin Hobbs earned the win.

Ryan Bishop and Tyler had doubles for the Seahawks.

St. Georges 5, Sussex Tech 3: The Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the top of the second before holding off the Ravens.

Sussex Tech’s Jason Shockley homered and doubled with teammate Noah Covington pitching five scoreless innings.

Laurel 8, Seaford 5: The Bulldogs opened up an 8-0 lead after scoring four runs in the fifth in the Henlopen Conference win on Friday,

Brady Lee, Holden Deihm, Kobe Heinicke and Dalton Perdue all contributed multiple hits to Laurel’s 13-hit attack with Heinicke finishing the game in relief after the Blue Jays erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Ray Brady, Isaiah Lake and Caden Dickerson sparked Seaford’s comeback.

Girls’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 14, South River, Md. 13: The Vikings built a 9-6 halftime lead before earning the non-conference victory.

Meredith Lockwood tallied four goals for Cape (6-0) with Sawyer Walker (1 assist), Alia Marshall (1 assist) and Emily Monigle all adding two. Laci Dixon made seven saves as both teams took 20 shots.

Newark Charter 11, Smyrna 6: Charter out-scored the Eagles, 6-2, in the second half to put away the win.

Jessica Bergold had three of Smyrna’s goals with Emma Mayew, Megan Keller and Raina Semenick scoring the others. Katelynn Porter made 16 saves.

St. Mark’s 17, Indian River 4: Morgan McGee netted two goals for the Indians in the loss.

Drew Szlasa and Madeline Harris also scored while Allyson Clark stopped six shots.

Boys’ lacrosse

First State Military 9, Conrad 8: The Bulldogs edged the Red Wolves in a Diamond State Athletic Conference matchup.

Worcester Prep, Md. 8, Caesar Rodney 6: Worcester out-scored the Riders, 5-3, in the second half to notch the win on Friday night.

Sean Wolleyhand (1 assist) and James Cava both tallied two goals for CR (1-3) with Evan McLeary and Tyler Morris netting the others.

Jacob Stant made 10 saves for the Riders, who were out-shot, 28-14.

Softball

Laurel 18, Arcadia, Va. 1: The Bulldogs put up 11 runs in the second to break open the contest.

Kaegan Brittingham homered to spark Laurel’s 18-hit attack while Rachel Calloway and Erin Carey combined to pitch a five-inning two-hitter.

Woodbridge 15, Brandywine 1: Mackenzie Masten collected four hits, including two doubles and a triple, and stole four bases to pace the Raiders.

Taylor Scott, Harley Short, Hailee Smith, Kaelyn Parks, Laura Tatman and Amiah Tucker also had multiple hit as Woodbridge finished with 18 hits in the contest. Winning pitcher Tucker allowed only four hits and a walk while striking out 14 in five innings.

Girls’ soccer

Cape Henlopen 3, Lake Forest 0: Lindsey Swontek netted a pair of first-half goals as the Vikings improved to 5-0.

Leah Marsh scored in the second half for Cape, which finished with advantages of 10-3 in shots and 7-3 in corner kicks. Lucy Siranides made three saves.

Riley Wood made seven saves for Lake Forest (3-3).

Delmarva Christian 8, Woodbridge 1: Mara Agapito and Sara Walton both scored twice for the Royals, who led 6-1 at halftime.

Grace Fetterman added a goal and two assists with Claire Marshall and Makayla Heinrichs stopping five shots apiece. Delmarva Christian held advantages of 25-11 in shots and 3-2 in corner kicks.

Bethany Knutsen scored the Raiders’ goal and Anjolie Suberro made 17 saves.
