Local College roundup: Hornets, Hens post baseball wins

Jordan Haddaway pitched six shutout innings as Delaware State blanked UMES, 2-0, to earn a split of a MEAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

In the nightcap, Haddaway struck out eight while allowing only four hits and one walk. Reliever C.J. Loper worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to earn his third save.

Krew Bouldin drilled a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth to break the scoreless tie for the Hornets (7-7 MEAC, 10-14 overall).

Bouldin also had two RBIs in the RBI with Miquel Rivera (Polytech) and Alec Rodriguez (Dover) both adding two hits.

Delaware 13, Saint Peter’s 0: J.J. Freeman homered twice, including a grand slam, while Joey Silan allowed just one hit for the Blue Hens.

Delaware (18-10) has now won eight consecutive games, its longest winning streak since a 13-game run in 2013.

Freeman drove home five runs while Joseph Carpenter finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and three RBI. Aidan Kane was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and three RBI, while Bryce Greenly (Milford) added two hits and scored twice.

Silan gave up a leadoff single in the top of the first but did not allow another hit from there, striking out eight batters in seven shutout frames. In his last two outings Silan has surrendered just two hits and struck out 15 in 13 scoreless innings.

College lacrosse

Hofstra 12, Delaware 11: The Pride handed the Blue Hens their third loss in a row, the last two of which have come by just one goal each.

Delaware (0-2 CAA, 6-5 overall) tallied the final two goals of the game before falling short.

J.P. Ward led the Hens with three goals and one assist, while Reed Kurtz scooped up a team-high six ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers.

Owen Grant posted a season-high four caused turnovers to claim the No. 1 spot on the Delaware career charts with 74.

WOMEN, Delaware 13, William & Mary 11: Senior Danika Swech tallied a career-high four goals and two assists in the Blue Hens’ CAA victory.

Goalie Mercy McCarthy recorded her third-straight game with 10 or more saves, stopping 12 shots for Delaware (1-2 CAA, 4-9).

Coastal Carolina 20, Delaware State 3: Rosella Nardi, Saniya Craft and Nahkaleigh Hayes-Jones accounted for Delaware State’s goals in the loss.
