Zach Dale and Ethan Edelson combined to pitch a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Delaware State edged Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-2, in MEAC baseball at Perdue Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The victory gave the Hornets (3-5 MEAC, 6-10 overall) a split of their four-game weekend series with the Hawks (4-4 MEAC, 5-16 overall). UMDES won Saturday’s first game, 11-2, as the two squads played their second doubleheader.
Delaware State took the lead for good with two runs in the second inning. Jordan King (2-for-3) doubled home a run and then scored on a single by Mike Worthington.
The Hornets then went up 3-1 in the sixth when Alan Alonso scored on an error.
Dale improved to 1-1 after going 5.2 innings before Edelson closed out the win.
The two combined to walk seven but stranded nine UMDES runners on base in the seven-inning game.
James Madison 13, Delaware 4: The Dukes scored nine runs in a decisive second inning before taking the second game of the CAA series.
The Blue Hens (0-2 CAA, 10-10 overall) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Bryce Greenly (Milford) doubled home Jordan Hutchins (Dover) before Dominic Ragazzo crossed the plate on a Joseph Carpenter sacrifice fly.
Gabe Dermott cracked a two-run homer for the Hens in the bottom of the ninth.
Men’s lacrosse
Villanova 18, Delaware 13: The Blue Hens fell behind, 10-6, by halftime and never pulled even in the second half before falling to the Wildcats.
Delaware (6-3) did close with 10-9 in the third quarter but Villanova (5-3) ran off the next five goals to take back control. It was the Hens’ fourth-straight loss to the Wildcats.
JP Ward led the Hens with four goals and two assists. Mike Robinson tallied three goals and two assists, Tye Kurtz finished with two goals and one assist, and goalie Paul Reidy had nine saves and two ground balls.
Women’s lacrosse
Delaware 12, Old Dominion 11: Danika Swech scored with just 37 seconds left to break the game’s sixth tie and lift the Blue Hens (3-7).
Swech roll dodged around her defender down the middle of the eight, firing a shot at the top left corner of the cage.
Lizzie Yurchak tallied a season-best five points (3g, 2a) for Delaware which was also led by Riley Gillin (1g, 3a) and Delaney McDaniel (2g,2a). Goalkeeper Mercy McCarthy earned her first win of the season, making nine stops with a .450 save percentage.
Wofford 20, Delaware State 9: The Terriers three goals in the first four minutes en route to the iwn.
Mica Lambert, Rosella Nardi, Emmy McGill and Nahkaleigh Hayes-Jones scored two goals each for the Hornets (1-8).
Softball
Blue Hens drop CAA openers: Delaware dropped a pair of games at UNCW, 5-3 and 4-0. to open CAA play.
Emily Winburn pitched another complete game, allowing just two unearned runs, Julz Garber had two of UD’s five hits and Hanna Garber homered and drove in all three runs in the opener for Delaware (16-9).
Graceyn Frost struck out four and allowed three earned runs in a complete-game effort in the nightcap. Halle Kisamore and Chloe Blantz had UD’s only hits.
