NEWARK — Thyrick Pitts already committed to Danny Rocco once.

On Tuesday, the highly-regarded wide receiver committed to Rocco again — this time to play for Delaware.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Pitts could become one of the more important members of Rocco’s first Blue Hen recruiting class, which can officially sign on Feb. 1.

Delaware needs to upgrade its talent level at receiver, where it has struggled over the past two seasons.

Pitts, from Forest Park (Va.) High, verbally committed to Richmond in September but then reopened his recruiting when Rocco left the Spiders to take the Delaware job in December.

“My decision ultimately came down to where I felt most comfortable and where it felt like it was the best fit for me,” said Pitts. “I am familiar with this coaching staff and I loved how involved the community and the university is with this program. We have a really bright future here.”

Pitts said the other two schools he was strongly considering were Army and William & Mary, the Hens’ Colonial Athletic Association rival.

He visited Army but cancelled a planned recruiting trip to Richmond this coming weekend. He reportedly had a total of 17 scholarship offers.

As a senior at Forest Park, Pitts caught 33 passes for 593 yards and nine touchdowns.

Smyrna’s Carter commits

Smyrna High All-State lineman Jerren Carter also made his college choice, verbally committing to West Virginia Wesleyan.

An offensive tackle, he also had offers from Gannon, Fairmont, Notre Dame College and Shepherd.

“When I went on the official visit, it just felt like home to me,” said Carter. (Coach) Del Smith and the way his staff is rebuilding — we are going to be a great team and I just can’t put into words right now. I’m excited.”

Carter was one of the mainstays up front on the Eagles’ back-to-back Division I state championship teams. His twin brother, Terren, is an offensive lineman at Wesley College.

Belin hired to coach ‘D’ line

Rocco has turned to a familiar assistant to fill the Hens’ defensive line coaching position.

Levern Belin, who worked alongside Rocco at Virginia, Liberty and Richmond over the last decade, was hired for the position on Wednesday.

Belin replaces Dennis Dottin-Carter, who left the Blue Hens for a job at Connecticut over the weekend.

“Coach Belin and I have a long history together dating back to his recruitment to Wake Forest University,” said Rocco. “Levern is an outstanding football coach and is regarded as an even better mentor and role model.

“He has coached at the highest levels of BCS football and has instructed a number of outstanding student-athletes.”

Belin has been a college coach for 25 seasons. A native of Marshville, N.C., he served with Rocco for the last eight seasons, including five at Richmond and three at Liberty (2009-11).

The two were also on the same coaching staff at Boston College in 1991, at Maryland in 1999, and at Virginia in 2005. All told, the two have coached together for 11 seasons.
