Local College notes: It will be an emotional Senior Day for Hens' Allen, Anderson

NEWARK — It’s a bit of a surreal feeling for Ryan Allen.

One minute, the Delaware basketball standout was just beginning his career with the Blue Hens.

The next thing he knows, Allen is facing his last home game.

“It’s just crazy that we’re here how,” he said on Thursday night. “I’m at my last game at ‘The Bob.’ It was a wild, fun ride. I appreciate it.

“I wouldn’t change a single thing. You’ve got to take the ups and downs that come with it. It was fun. I loved it. I loved the fans, I loved the people, the coaches ... all the teammates I got the chance to play with. It’s going to be emotional on Saturday.”

The moment will no doubt be emotional for Allen’s backcourt mate, Kevin Anderson, today, too, when Delaware honors its seniors before Saturday’s 4 p.m. home game with UNC-Wilmington.

While Dylan Painter, Anthony Ochefu, Reggie Gardner and Davis Long will also be honored before their last home contest, it’s Allen and Anderson that have pretty much been the faces of the program since they arrived in Newark in the fall of 2017.

Between them, they’ve scored 3,090 points and played 8,210 minutes in a Blue Hen uniform. Nobody has played in more games or hit more three-pointers for Delaware than Allen (127 games, 302 three-pointers) and only two players have scored more points (1,781).

The Senior Day will be especially emotional for coach Martin Ingelsby, too.

“We’ve been with those guys a long time,” said Ingelsby. “I’m just really thankful for everything they’ve done for our program. They’re my first recruiting class. We spent a lot of time together.

“I think those are relationships that will last for a lifetime. I hope they enjoyed the experience as much as I enjoyed coaching them. They came in as young guys and now they’re leaving as pretty mature men.

“They moved this program forward,” he said. “I think they’ve helped build a really strong culture. Those guys are as an important part of it as anybody we’ve had.”

Hens sign two more

The Delaware football program announced on Friday that it has added Josh Stevens, an offensive lineman grad transfer from Georgetown, and incoming freshman running back Jo’Nathan Silver to its recruiting class.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Stevens started in 14 games over the last two seasons with the Hoyas.

“Joshua is an experienced, talented athlete who will immediately add competition to our O-Line room,” said first-year Blue Hens coach Ryan Carty.

Silver, a 5-foot-10, 195-pounder from Washington Township, N.J., collected 1,111 all-purpose yards as a senior.

Notes

• After a stellar freshman season at Delaware, former Smyrna High standout Lexi Moore has transferred to Wilmington University.

Last spring the infielder was named to the CAA All-Rookie team after starting all but two games for the Blue Hens. Moore was fourth in the league in steals (15), fourth n Delaware with 23 runs and fifth on the team with 31 hits. She was also named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll.

• Smyrna High receiver Devin DeMoe announced this week that he’ll continue his football career at NCAA Division II Stroudsburg, Pa. University.

• Delaware State men’s basketball player Myles Carter reached 1,000 points for his career when he netted 27 points in the Hornets’ 79-74 loss to South Carolina State on Monday. DSU hosts Morgan State at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in its home finale.

• Former Dover High runners Gavin Williams, Tayshaun Chisholm and Nate Guy all shone at the MEAC Indoor Track & Field championships. A junior at Howard, Williams was named the MVP of the men’s meet after winning the 5,000 meters (15:16.48) and the 3,000 (8:54.20) while also placing second in the one mile (4:23.75).

Chisholm, a junior at DSU, won the 60-meter hurdles (7.92) while the Hornets’ Guy placed seventh in the 800 meters.

• The Delaware State baseball team will begin playing its home games as Wesley College’s former Bob Reed Field, which is now part of DSU’s Downtown Campus. The Hornets are slated to make their debut on the field on March 4 when they host Lehigh at 3 p.m.

• Caesar Rodney High grad Katherine Tamesis, a junior on the Salisbury women’s tennis team, was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week. Playing third singles and No. 1 doubles, Tamesis started the season with four straight wins.

• Delaware football running back Dejoun Lee was named one of only two recipients of the FCS Subdivision Athletics Directors Association Postgraduate Scholarship. Lee earned his master’s degree in international business from Delaware in December.
