After a six-game losing streak, Delaware State seemed destined to finish near the bottom of the MEAC men’s basketball standings.

But the Hornets have righted the ship in recent weeks. They’ve won three in a row ahead of this weekend’s two-game road trip to Baltimore.

A sweep against Morgan State and Coppin State over the next three days would move Delaware State above .500 in MEAC play and have the Hornets in contention for a bye in the upcoming conference tournament.

Delaware State (5-6 MEAC, 8-18 overall) faces Morgan State (7-2 MEAC, 10-12 overall) today at 4 p.m. before another game on Monday at Coppin State (4-6 MEAC, 5-20 overall) at 7:30 p.m.

The suddenly-surging Hornets have needed overtime to win their last two road games (against Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M) and have moved up to seventh in the conference.

They’ve been helped out by the return of Polytech High product Devaughn Mallory, who missed seven games with a calf injury, including five contests during DSU’s six-game losing streak.

In the last four games, Mallory is 27-of-34 on shots from the field (79.4 percent) and has scored 59 points.

Morgan State is coming off a 68-62 home loss to league-leader North Carolina Central on Monday. The Hornets defeated North Carolina Central in the second game of the MEAC portion of their schedule.

But the Bears have had their share of success recently against Delaware State.

Morgan State has won four of the last five meetings to open up a 54-40 series lead. The Bears won the lone contest a year ago 63-58 at home.

The Hornets have lost their last three games at Morgan State since a 74-73 victory on the Bears’ home court on Feb. 15, 2012.

• Cape Henlopen High grad Tom Ott has won seven matches for the Navy wrestling team this season including one by pin.

• After falling to York on Wednesday, the schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Wesley College men’s basketball team.

Today the Wolverines play a 4 p.m. game at Christopher Newport (19-2), which is ranked No. 3 nationally by D3hoops.com and owns a 14-game winning streak, The Wolverines are tied for fourth in the Capital Athletic Conference as they try to hang on to their spot in the top six.

• Delaware’s first football practice under new coach Danny Rocco will start the week of April 3 and conclude with the Blue-White game on May 6.

• The Delaware baseball team opens the season Friday against Pittsburgh in Kissimmee, Fla. The Blue Hens will also face Ohio State, Kansas State and Pitt again during thier four-game stay in the Sunshine State.

• Delaware State also heads south to start its baseball season on Friday with a three-game set against Charleston Southern.

• Smyrna High grad Brionna Johnson, a senior on the Wesley women’s basketball team, netted a season-high 22 points in the Wolverines’ loss to York on Wednesday. It was her third 20-point game of the year.

Johnson’s career high is 30 points, which she accomplished in her sophomore season.

• Seaford High grad LaShyra Williams is the leading scorer for the Wilmington University women’s basketball team at 16 points per game. She is a junior guard.

Emma Matthews a Smyrna native who played at Padua, is averaging 5.2 points for the Wildcats.

• Delaware currently has eight quarterbacks listed on its football roster, although some are walk-ons.

• Tammy Anderson, a professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, has been named the University of Delaware’s Faculty Athletic Representative. She will be the official voting delegate for the university on NCAA matters and works with UD’s Faculty Board on Athletics.
