Canal Little League has produced its share of really good softball teams over the years.
But Canal’s 2017 Major League all-star squad almost got the chance to call itself world champions.
Playing in Little League’s biggest age division (11-12 year olds), Canal finished third in the World Series last summer in Portland, Oregon.
Canal’s World Series run has earned it the 2017 state Team of the Year award from the Delaware Sportswriters & Broadcasters Association. The squad will be honored at the DSBA’s 69th annual banquet, at noon, on Presidents Day, Feb. 19, at the Sheraton Wilmington South Hotel, 365 Airport Road, New Castle.
After going 9-0 in the Eastern Regional in Bristol, Conn., Canal reached the World Series semifinals before losing to eventual champion, Waco, Tex. Canal outscored its opponents, 76-15, while winning the state crown.
In addition to the John J. Brady Award as Delaware’s Outstanding Athlete of 2017, which will be announced that day, the banquet will honor the state’s Team of the Year, and the winners of the Tubby Raymond Coach of the Year Award, the Herm Reitzes Award for Public Service and the Buddy Hurlock Unsung Hero Award.
Among the nominees for the Athlete of the Year award are Smyrna High football player Will Knight, Dover pro tennis player Madison Brengle, Caesar Rodney High grad Duron Harmon (New England Patriots), Middletown High grad Chris Godwin (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Middletown gymnast Morgan Hurd, former Middletown High and Delaware pitcher Chris Kuhl (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Delaware field hockey player Greta Nauck.
