FELTON - Linda Margaret (Cox) Kates passed away on Oct. 30, 2013 at Kent General Hospital in Dover. She was born April 26, 1921. Margaret worked for the Postal Service from 1949 until her retirement in 1979, serving the last eleven years as the Felton Postmaster. She was a member of NAPUS. She was also a member of several organizations including the Avon Club of Felton, the Sarah Rebecca Lodge 16 with I.O.O.F, of which she was a Past Nobel Grand, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 8801, NARFE, the Felton-Viola United Methodist Church and the Felton Fire Company Auxiliary. Besides enjoying her family and friends, she enjoyed knitting dish cloths and giving them to family, friends, and complete strangers. She also enjoyed baking congo squares, making pretzel salad, and freezing strawberries and lima beans. She was enjoying one of her favorite activities shelling beans, when she was taken ill. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Edgar Cox; mother, Linda Margaret (Pyott) Eberwein; and sister, Jane Ann (Cox) Griffin. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Thomas Lawrence Kates; she is also survived by her son, John (June); and her daughter, Peggy (Gary Furlong); she has five grandchildren, Jennifer (Doug) Lilly, Scott (Kathy) Furlong, Melinda Kates (Gerald Tate, Kurt (Sheri) Furlong, and Katie Furlong; and eleven great-grandchildren. Many in the town of Felton called her "Mom-Mom" and considered her their "adopted mother and grandmother". She will be missed. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, Main St., Felton, DE, where friends may call after 11 a.m. The Sarah Rebecca Lodge # 16 will conduct a memorial service a half hour prior to commencement of the Funeral. Burial will be at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Felton-Viola UMC, Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 247, Felton, DE 19943, or to the Delaware Eyecare and Research of the I.O.O.F., 2411 Appleton Rd., Elkton, MD 21921.
