School safety should be a top priority within each school, and every employee should do their part with ensuring the safety of our children while in their care.
As local school districts prepare for the upcoming school year, I believe it is very important to prepare all stakeholders, which includes the Department of Education, school board officials, superintendents, principals, counselors, parents, staff, etc., to properly support our children.
What we experienced within the last school year, positive or negative, is a reflection of our leadership within the Department of Education and local school districts. Our children should feel safe and supported within any school environment. So many of our children experienced uncomfortable incidents, where they don’t feel school is a safe space anymore. They deserve to feel comfortable to receive their education, and for so many of our students, this is not an option for them.
As parents, we should have expectations for school employees to meet, just as our children have expectations to be met. Silent school board officials not taking action when we voice our school-safety concerns repeatedly are useless at this point. We need school district officials taking accountability and appropriate action, where school safety and students are the first priority.
