SMYRNA - Leroy Kenneth Sayers, of Smyrna, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, April 21, 2014 at the age of 90. Leroy was born in Somerset, Pennsylvania on August 24, 1923. His first job after school and on the weekends was working for the Somerset Daily American Newspaper for 3 dollars per week. After graduation in 1942 from Somerset High School, he worked in Cleveland, Ohio in a war defense plant. He enlisted in the US Navy in May 1943. He excelled in mechanical ability and was sent to train at Navy Pier in Chicago and served as a machinist mate at Glenview Naval Air Station near Chicago. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After serving his country in World War II, he attended Bowman Technical School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania as a master watchmaker, engraver, and jewelry technician. Leroy, along with his wife June and young son Ron, moved to Smyrna, in the summer of 1950 and Sayers Jewelers was opened August 4th, 1950. He was a perfectionist, and a highly skilled jeweler, hand engraver, and diamond setter. His business ethics and products offered were of the highest quality. He always said to "do one thing, and do it better than anyone else." He was very proud to see the second and third generations carrying their success to become Sayers Jewelers & Gemologists, with customers in 48 states. For 3 years in the early 60's, he also owned Sayers Market (now Main Street Market), where he introduced barbecued chicken to Smyrna. He then took leave from the jewelry store for 2 years to be a traveling jewelry sales representative, and then returned to expand and remodel the store. Leroy was involved in the community; in 1953, he was president of the Smyrna Rotary Club, and also a member of the Duck Creek Historical Society and the Smyrna Opera House. From a teenager he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and boating. He was a licensed private pilot, sky diver, scuba diver, and boater. He enjoyed antiques, especially if they whistled, clanged, or went "BOOM." He and June spent many Wednesdays at Crumpton Sale. Just 3 weeks before his 90th birthday, he was still enjoying riding his motorcycle. Leroy was preceded in death by his father, Thomas William Sayers; and mother, Sara S. Sayers of Somerset, Penn. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, June Beeghly Sayers; son, Ronald Lee Sayers and wife Ellen Killen Sayers; grandsons, Ronald W. Sayers (Billie Jo), Rodney L. Sayers, and Thomas K. Sayers (Melissa); as well as great-grandchildren, Jessica J. Sayers, Alison K. Sayers, Harry Sayers, Amber M. Sayers, and Madison L. Sayers. He is also survived by his sister, Marjorie Shaffer; many nieces and nephews and his best friend of 34 years, his parrot Joe. A viewing will be held on Sunday evening, April 27, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main Street in Smyrna and again on Monday morning, April 28, 2014 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 12:30 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna.
