SMYRNA - Leonard R. Petro Sr. went home to be with Jesus on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013. He was born Aug. 6, 1939 in Mount Carmel, Pa. and raised in Catawissa, Pa. on a 138 acre farm with his parents Andrew P. and Evelyn Gregorowicz Petro and his siblings. His first job was at Bloomsburg Airport, and then Mr. Petro started U.S. Army basic training in 1962 at Fort Gordon, Ga. He then transferred to Fort Bliss, Texas of the First Armored Division Training of Ballistic Missiles; and later transferred to the U.S. Army European (USA REVR) Germany Missile Command. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 31, 1968. After his time in the Army, he was employed at Phoenix Steel as a supervisor. He then worked for Scott Paper in Eddystone, Pa. and later at Scott Paper Chester Operations as a mechanical maintenance machinist. His remaining years before retirement were with Kimberly Clark, who had bought out Scott Paper. He served for over 30 years. Mr. Petro loved to travel and spend time on his family farm in Smyrna with his family. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew P. "Pat" Petro Jr., Edward Petro, and Lawrence Petro; and a sister, Helen Howell. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Margaret Frame Petro; his son, Thomas Petro and wife Kathleen who had cared for him through the one true sovereign Lord God; his son, Leonard Jr.; his daughter Bonnie DeGirolano; and husband Gene; his step-son, Craig Ponte and wife Faye; beloved grandchildren Fawn, Jason, Amanda, Jonathan, Sean, and Corey; four great-grandchildren, Hope, Kelsey, Nathan, and Natalie; and siblings, Agnes Fetterman, Jerome Petro, Mike Petro, Evelyn Wemple, and Gene Racine; and a beloved friend, Rev. Anderson Okeke. Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where a viewing will be held at noon.
