Eckert, 92 LEWES - Leonard Emner Eckert, age 92, of Lewes, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at Brandywine Senior Living, Rehoboth Beach. He was born on March 11, 1923 in Washington, D.C., son of the late George and Margaret (Zegowitz) Dewey. Mr. Eckert was a World War II veteran who proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard. After the war, he embarked on a 67 year career with the Local 26 IBEW in Washington, D.C., retiring as a Master Electrician. During this time, Mr. Eckert was a charter member of the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad in Montgomery County, Md. Upon his retirement to the Lewes beach area, Mr. Eckert became involved in the local community. He was an avid volunteer at Bethel United Methodist Church where he had been a co-chair of the church's antique shows. He enjoyed volunteering countless hours at Beebe Medical Center for several years and was a member of the American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro. Not one to stay still, Mr. Eckert also found time to work at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center where he assisted in setting up various shows. Mr. Eckert with his wife, Edna, loved traveling together taking many memorable trips across the country. He was also an avid square dancer who enjoyed participating in the Whirlways and Sussex Shores Senior Squares. Mr. Eckert is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Edna Lea Eckert of Lewes; a daughter, Christine DeMaio and her husband Dorian of Park City, Utah; a granddaughter, Lauren DeMaio; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, August 17, 2015, at 11 a.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE 19958, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be private at the Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Rockville, Md.
