Leon Dewey Smith Sr.

HOUSTON - Leon Dewey Smith Sr., of Houston, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2011, at Milford Center. He was 90. Leon was born November 12, 1921, in Federalsburg, Md. to Herman and Mary Jenkins Smith. He was an US Army veteran and served his country during WWII. Leon was a mechanic with the Firestone Company in Milford and Dover for 35 years. At home he had a shop where he would tinker, doing mechanical odds and ends. Leon also did farming. He was a member of Pilgrim Chapel in Harrington, where he served on the church board, and taught Sunday School, which he loved, for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louise in 2009; and a sister, Elizabeth Johnson. He is survived by seven siblings, Pearl DeFord of Greenwood, Hannah Cohee of Harrington, Alverta Roberts of Lincoln, Dot Harris, Herman D. Smith, Delores Carmean, and Joyce Trader all of Milford; two sons, Leon D. Smith Jr. and Kenneth W. Smith both of Milford; two daughters, Mary Lou and David Timmons and Carolyn Overstreet, both of Milford; seven grandchildren, Leon and Barney Smith of Farmington, Robert and Kim Overstreet of Rainelle, W.V., Billy Ray of Milford, Candace and Eric Dittman of Frederica, Crystal and Daniel Van Vorst of Woodside, Dawn Wheway of Lincoln, and Michael Ray of Milford; many great grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2012, at Fleischauer Funeral Home, 16 West Market Street, Greenwood, DE 19950. Friends may call one hour prior to funeral. Interment will be held at St. Johnstown Cemetery in Greenwood. In lieu of flowers the family suggest contributions to Pilgrim Chapel, 4792 Milford/Harrington Hwy, Harrington, DE 19952.
