CAMBRIDGE - Leo Garcia Keene, 41, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, at Dorchester General Hospital.
Born Sept. 8, 1965, he was the son of Julie Keene and Leon Askins Sr.
Leo attended the public schools of Dorchester County, a graduate of Cambridge South Dorchester High School, Class of 1983.
Mr. Keene dedicated his life, since 1983, touching young people to help keep them off the streets. He started with the Rockers Marching Unit, Afro-Centric Alliance of the District of Columbia, Metropolitan All-Stars of the District of Columbia, DDST and the Ragin (Rejoicing Angels Glorifying In Dance), Unstoppables 1010 Marching Band Unit. Mr. Keene also taught many students, The Best Friends Club, over five hundred that performed at the Kennedy Center in the District of Columbia.
He also enjoyed praise dancing for his church, Jubilee Christian Fellowship. One of his many talents he enjoyed doing was making collages with pictures of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Annie and Floyd Keene; aunts and uncles, Hattie Day, Jeanette Dennis, Floyd Keene Jr. and Mary Molock.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two special people he considered second parents, Cordell Burris and Dolphin Smith; sisters and brothers, Annie Keene (Thomas) of Cambridge, Eric Keene (Nicole) of Washington, DC, Robin Stanley (Gregory) of Cambridge, Sharon Warner (Norman) of Cambridge, Timothy Askins (Michelle) and Madonna Young, all of Cambridge, Charles Askins (Bonnie) of Virginia, Gregory Askins (Davette), Leon Askins Jr. (Katie), Irene Askins and Amy Askins, all of Cambridge; aunts and uncles, Doretha Luke (Henry) of Hurlock, Lena Bolden (Milton) of Hurlock, William Keene Sr., Joseph Keene, Augustine Keene, Elise Churchill and Ella Mae Downs, all of Cambridge, Savannah Askins, Delphine Mitchell, both of New York) and Valerie Woods of Delaware; Bonnie and Terence Henry, Patrice Young, Daryl Fountain Sr., and Dion Brooks, he considered as brothers and sisters; a number of nieces, nephews; a special cousin, Aja Luke and other cousins and friends.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, at Jubilee Christian Fellowship in Cambridge. The Rev. George Wheatley will officiate. Burial will follow in Meekins Neck Cemetery. There will be a viewing two hours prior to the services. Arrangements are being handled by Henry Funeral Home, P.A.
In lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made to Henry Funeral Home, P.A.
