NEWARK — Top-seeded Laurel High finished its season undefeated, holding off No. 2 St. Elizabeth, 28-13, to capture its second-straight DIAA Class 1A state football championship this afternoon.
The Bulldogs, who finish 13-0, led 14-0 in the second quarter because beating the Vikings (11-2) in the finals for the second year in a row at Delaware Stadium.
St. Elizabeth closed within 14-13 on a touchdown with 7:50 left. But Laurel blocked the extra point kick to hang on to a one-point advantage.
The Bulldogs then drove 54 yards in 11 plays with Kylse Wilson scoring on a four-yard run with 2:42 left to give Laurel a more-comfortable lead.
The Bulldogs then added an insurance TD when Damonta Smith picked up a fumble and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown with only :36 remaining.
