Lake Forest, Delmar, Sussex Academy headed to DIAA hockey semifinals

Lake Forest High tallied the game’s only goal in the second quarter as the No. 8 Spartans toppled No. 1 Newark Charter, 1-0. in the second round of the DIAA Division II field hockey state tournament on Saturday.

Junior Rylin McCloskey scored for Lake Forest while freshman goalie Jessica Lewis made four saves as Lake Forest handed the Patriots (15-1) their first loss of the season.

Lake Forest (11-6) advances to face No. 4 Wilmington Friends in Wednesday’s semifinals. The contest will be played at 6 p.m. at DSU’s Downtown Campus Field — the old Wesley College stadium.

The Quakers topped No. 5 Caravel, 2-1, in their semifinal contest on Saturday.

The shutout was the 10th of the season for the Spartans, who lost to Newark Charter, 1-0, in the second round of last year’s state tourney. Lake Forest is in the semifinals for the first time since 2019.

Delmar 6, Saint Mark’s 1: Five players scored goals as the No. 2 Wildcats returned to the Division II state semifinals.

Henlopen Conference champion Delmar (16-1) will face third-seeded Sussex Academy in Wednesday’s semifinals at 4 p.m. at DSU’s Downtown Campus Field — the old Wesley College stadium.

Senior Laela Brown collected two goals and an assist for Delmar, which led the No. 7 Spartans, 4-0, at halftime.

Also scoring for the Wildcats were Jordyn Hollamon (1 assist), Kadence Melvin, Rylin Nichols and Emily Smith. Sophomore goalie Marleigh Wells made eight saves as Delmar finished with advantages of 20-12 in shots and 14-6 in corners.

The Wildcats have now 26 straight state tournament games since 2016. They beat Sussex Academy, 4-0, on Sept. 17.

Sussex Academy 9, Archmere 1: The third-seeded Seahawks earned their spot in Wednesday’s semifinals with the win over the No. 6 Auks.

Sussex Academy (13-3) will take a five-game winning streak into Wednesday’s semifinal rematch with Delmar at DSU’s Downtown Campus Stadium at 4 p.m.

Girls’ volleyball

Ursuline 3, Smyrna 0: The No. 2 Raiders downed the No. 15 Eagles in the second round of the DIAA state tournament on Saturday evening.

The match was a rematch of last year’s state finals when the Eagles became the first Henlopen Conference team to win the state championship.

This year, no Downstate schools reached the state quarterfinals.

Padua 3, Cape Henlopen 0: The top-seeded Pandas ousted the No. 16 Vikings in a second-round match on Saturday.

Padua won by scores of 25-11, 25-17, 25-14 to advance to the quarterfinals.
