Kent County Master Gardeners awarding scholarships

DOVER — The Kent Master Gardeners will be awarding $1,000 scholarships for the 2020/2021 academic year to students who have been a Kent County resident for at least two years prior to the application date and who are enrolled in, or have been accepted by, an accredited college or university to study plant and soil science or a horticulture-related field. Home-schooled students are also eligible to apply.

The Master Gardeners raise the money for the scholarships at their annual plant sale which is held annually on the last Saturday in April at the Delaware State University greenhouse.

In order to be eligible for the scholarships, the student must have a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, include a short essay of their education and career goals, and official transcript from their current school. Two letters of recommendations from a non-family member must also be included. One academic reference is preferred. The applications will be judged on the GPA, the appropriateness of the field of study, letters of recommendation, leadership activities, and community involvement.

Applications have been sent to area high schools, private schools, charter schools and area colleges/universities along with the Future Farmers of America, Delaware Farm Credit Bureau, and Mid-Atlantic Farm Credit. The application can be found here.

Questions can be directed to kentmgardeners@yahoo.com.

The deadline for the application is Friday, April 16.
