DOVER — The Kent County Public Library, in collaboration with Urban Sketchers Delaware and Plein Air Partners of the Mid-Atlantic, is set to host its first plein-air art event April 21.
Artists from across Delaware and the mid-Atlantic will gather at the library, 497 S. Red Haven Lane, Dover, to paint outdoors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., as the light changes throughout the day.
Capturing natural light became a popular movement in the mid-1800s. Plein-air was aided by the introduction of paint in tubes and the box easel. Racing the sun and the elements lent a sense of energy and urgency to the work, making the format a cornerstone of the Impressionist movement and practicing enthusiasts such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Jean Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro.
Visitors will be permitted, the library said.
The library asks that guests (artists and visitors) be considerate of nearby businesses and residents’ properties.
