DOVER - Delaware State Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of a 16-year-old male connected to a weekend shooting incident in the Rodney Village neighborhood.

Authorities said the juvenile allegedly fired approximately 12 handgun rounds in the direction of a 26-year-old male in the area of Joshua Clayton Road Sunday. No injuries were reported and the juvenile fled on foot, police said.

Troopers were called to the scene at approximately 2:05 p.m., spokesperson Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said.

Investigating detectives identified the juvenile as a suspect, and arrested him at his home on Tuesday, police said.

“The motive remains unclear at this time,” according to Cpl. DeMalto.
Also ,Cpl. DeMalto said, “To my knowledge, no firearm has been recovered at this time.”

The juvenile was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person under 21, and first-degree reckless endangering. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released after having his $1,500 cash bond posted.

The State News had inquired on Tuesday about a possible incident in the area two days prior, and Delaware State Police said no information was available.

Regarding the timing of the public announcement of the shooting nearly three days after it occurred, Cpl. DeMalto said that “Detectives were following up on fruitful leads and wanted to ensure that the investigation was not compromised in any way prior to an arrest being made.”

Additionally, Cpl. DeMalto said, “Detectives contacted nearby residents and witnesses during their investigation to obtain their statements. We also hope that today’s news release will reach the public and members of the surrounding community, and show that DSP is working hard to address the concerns of violence and crime.”
