HARTLY - Joseph S. Vodvarka passed away on Sept. 12, 2012. He was born in Hartly on April 23, 1919, to Anton and Antonia Vodvarka and was the youngest of five brothers and a sister. He attended the Hartly Public School and John Bassett Moore High School. He served as a combat medic assigned to the 36th Texas Infantry Division entering World War II in 1942. His service included the amphibious invasion of Salerno, the battle of Monte Casino and Anzio and Northern France. He received a purple heart, three bronze stars, and was recently presented the chevalier de Legion D' Honneur from the French government for his part in the liberation of France. He worked as a carpenter out of Local 626 where he was an active union member for over fifty years retiring in 1985. He enjoyed a life-long passion for music, reading, and gardening and was known for the lovely roses he grew. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mildred; his daughter, Nancy of Hartly; son, Joseph and his wife Nancy of Smyrna; granddaughters, Danica Finch of Hartly and Laura Massey and her husband Mark, Traci Vodvarka of Smyrna, Ashley Vodvarka of Dover; and great-granddaughter, Paisley Massey as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Service of remembrance will be Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at noon in the Trader Funeral Home 12 Lotus Street Dover where family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Sharon Hill Memorial Park Dover, Del.
