DOVER - John Melvin Grampp passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Bay Health, Kent Campus. He was born in Dover, Delaware, the son of Christian and Catherine Grampp.
John grew up on a farm but fishing was his first love. After an early career in food service, including nearly eleven years at the Village Inn in Little Creek, John became a Waterman. He enjoyed crabbing and fishing – truly hard work. He was known as "Captain Johnny" or "Johnny G" by his friends. After retiring from the water, he enjoyed his garden and fruit trees, and his small flock of chickens.
John is survived by his brother, Fred Grampp (Karen), of Austin, Texas; and two sisters, Helen VanBlarcom (David) of Monroe, North Carolina, and Mary Brown (Richard) of Dover. He leaves behind one nephew, Andrew; and six nieces, including his special nieces, Susan Purr and Meredith Abbate; as well as his much-loved great niece, Elizabeth Abbate, of Dover. He is also survived by many wonderful friends including best friend, Gary Coleman.
In addition to his parents; John was predeceased by his brother, George Grampp.
John was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Smyrna, as well as the NRA and several watermen's associations.
Because of Covid restriction, services will be held at a later date.
Letters of condolence may be sent and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com
