SMYRNA - John H. Hurd, Jr., of Smyrna, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was 72. Mr. Hurd was a 1959 graduate of Smyrna High School, and had been employed as a farmer his entire life in the Smyrna area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and crabbing. He also raced harness horses for 20 years, and truly enjoyed the sport. He especially loved spending time with his family and close friends. He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who was loved by many and who will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and John Herbert Hurd; brothers, Bruce Hurd, Dale Hurd, Robert Hurd, and Earl Hurd; and a sister, Betty Lou Austin. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Beverly A. Hurd; a daughter, Jacquelyn Rooney and husband Lewis; a son, John H. Hurd III and his fiancée Dedrea; a brother, Wayne Hurd and his wife Nancy; two sisters, Kay Webster and her husband Tom, and Nancy Pleasanton; four grandchildren, Wade Heverin Jr.; Alexandra Heverin; Jack Heverin; and Brian Kain; his nephew and best friend, Timmy Hutchinson; his mother-in-law, Beatrice I. Benfield; a brother-in-law, Eugene V. Startt and his wife Charlotte; 15 nieces and nephews; and 22 great-nieces and nephews. Services will be 7 p.m., Friday Aug. 30, 2013 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 5 p.m. Interment will be private. Feel free to wear country casual attire. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society, 621 Clearwater Park Rd., West Palm Beach, FL 33401.
