HURLOCK - John H. Hallowell Sr., 81, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at Coastal Hospice in Salisbury.
He was born in Federalsburg on Dec. 12, 1925, to Russell Warren Hallowell and Esther Payne Hallowell. He attended Federalsburg School and was a graduate of Fishburn Military Academy and Goldey-Beacom Business College.
After serving his country with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II, he began his business career with his father and grandfather at one of the first Chevrolet dealerships in the country, J. W. Hallowell and Sons in Federalsburg. Upon the sale of the family business he became a poultry farmer for Bay Shore and later retired after selling real estate for many years with Powell Realtors.
Mr. Hallowell is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Eleanor M. Bennett whom he married on Oct. 11, 1947; two daughters, Tracey L. Tolson of Denton; Margie Reed and her husband, Mike of Hurlock; two sons, John H. Hallowell Jr. and his wife, Carolyn of East New Market, Thomas R. Hallowell Sr. and his wife, Patti of Hurlock; nine grandchildren - Kevin W. Smith, Kristy L. Myers, Ryan E. Koski, Lucas M. Reed, John H. Hallowell III, Stephanie M. Hallowell, Matthew E. Hallowell, Thomas R. Hallowell Jr., Logan K. Hallowell; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law and caregiver, Jean Hallowell of Hurlock and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Alton W. Hallowell and Richard R. Hallowell and a sister, Jeanne H. Trice.
He was a member of the Unity Washington United Methodist Church, Hurlock American Legion Post 243, Federalsburg VFW Post 5246, Nanticoke Masonic lodge, Maryland State Board of Realtors, Easton Elks Lodge BPOE 1622, Ruritan and Lions Club.
The family will receive friends tonight at the Unity Washington United Methodist Church in Hurlock.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will follow in the Maryland Veterans" Cemetery at Beulah. Pallbearers will be his nine grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Hurlock Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 178, Hurlock, MD 21643 or Unity Washington United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 298, Hurlock, MD 21643.
The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.
