
Messick, Sr., 92 QUEENSTOWN - John Glenn Messick, Sr. died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at Arcadia Assisted Living in Chester, Md. Born on April 11, 1920 in Harrington, Del., he was the son of the late Fred M. and Mae E. Broadrup Messick. A farmer at heart, he grew up farming with his family in Greenwood, Del. On Oct. 11, 1939, Glenn married Mary Virginia Barton of Queenstown, Md. He farmed in Trappe, Chestertown, and My Lord's Gift in Queenstown. Glenn also worked in Sharon, Pa. at a shipyard. For years he owned Messick's Gas Station & T.V. Repair in the center of Queenstown. Glenn served as a Navy Seabee stationed in Okinawa in 1945-1946 during WWII. He later served as Queenstown Town Commissioner and worked for Asplundh Tree Expert Company. Mr. Messick loved his family and spending family time making breakfast, tilling the land, and riding motorcycles at his home-away-from-home near Harper's Ferry, W. Va. He also enjoyed fishing and boating with family and friends. Glenn also got great pleasure fiddling in his garden and helping others. He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Queenstown. Glenn was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary; his daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Miller; son, John "Johnny" Messick, Jr.; sister, Dorothy Mae Webb; and brothers: James Floyd, Paul Frederick, Norris William, Irvin Francis, George Connell, and Thomas Harold Messick. He is survived by a son, William Lowe Messick of Havre de Grace; son in-law, Benjamin L. Miller of Bel Air; daughter in-law, Phyllis A. Messick of Chester; six grandchildren, Dawn Massarelli, Suellen Brewer, Suzanne Ankerbrand, Tina Duley, Michelle Willey, and John Messick, III; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
