John Franklin Thomas, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, colleague, and friend departed this life peacefully on September 14, 2022.
Born to Joshua and Magdalene Thomas, Sr. on December 12, 1941, and raised by Roy and Elsie Chase in Cambridge, MD, John graduated from Mace's Lane High School in 1961. He graduated from Bowie State College in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. While at Bowie State College John met the love of his life, Alease Jackson, and they married in 1965. He attended Morgan State University and earned a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1966. He was among the first Black teachers to integrate Prince George's County Public Schools. By 1996 he was retired from a 30-year career in education. He enjoyed 40 years in the sport of quarter mile drag racing, where he got his start as a teenager in Christ Rock.
He is survived by his wife, Alease Thomas; daughter, Joneis Thomas; sister, Mary Thomas; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Services will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022 at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church at 7806 Allentown Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744. Viewing begins at 10 a.m., with the homegoing service from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, MD 20722.
