SMYRNA - John E. Reed, Sr. left his earthly life to be with God on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015. John was born and raised in Smyrna. He is the son of the late George and Minnie Reed of Smyrna. He worked for Markley's Grain Elevator in Clayton for many years and transferred to the Philadelphia branch and lived in Bridesburg, Pa. and then Maple Shade, N.J. for 6 years. After returning to Smyrna, he worked for George C. Rothwell Grain Elevator and was their mechanic. He worked for his father-in-law, Joseph Peterson at Heavy Hauling in Dover. After retirement, he worked part-time for Apgar Sod Company for several years. He enjoyed square dancing and working in his shed on old tractors and gas engines. He traveled quite a bit and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sarita L. Reed (Peterson) of Smyrna; a daughter, Cathy Escherich (Dan) of Townsend; two sons, John E. Reed, Jr. (Cookie) and Alan Dale Reed, Sr. (Edna) both of Smyrna; seven loving grandchildren and seven beautiful great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter, Hayley, who is to be born any day; a sister, Elizabeth McCain of Smyrna; a brother, Harold Reed of Elsmere; and many nieces, nephews, family and special friends. A viewing will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2015 from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Monday, November 16, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main Street in Smyrna. Funeral services will begin Monday at 12 noon. Burial will be privately held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, Del. at a later date.
