Burris Sr., 91 KENTON - John Charles "Jack" Burris Sr. passed away on Sunday Jan. 5, 2014. He was born March 7, 1922 in Wilmington, the son of the late George and Catherine Burris Sr. Mr. Burris retired from Jos. T. Hardy and Sons, New Castle. He was a member of the 8th Army Division during World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany and a recipient of a Purple Heart. He made his home at the Nursing Unit at the Va. Hospital, Elsmere, for the last several years, where he was well known among the staff, patients, visitors, and volunteers of the hospital. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 20 years, Lucille Burris; his son, James Burris; two brothers, George Jr., and Charles Roy Burris; and a sister, Mary Elliott. He is survived by a daughter, Jackie Voshell Hardin and husband Michael, Knoxville, Tenn.; two sons, John Charles Burris Jr., of Wilmington; and Robert (Bobby) Burris and wife Cathy of Ocean View; a step-son, Joseph Insley, of Dover; a sister, Kathryn Hall, of New Castle; four grandchildren, Samuel Voshell and wife Joyce, of Pomona, Mo.; Julia Hartman and husband William of Worton, Md.; John Voshell, of Galena, Md.; and Robert Burris and wife Stacy, of Chesapeake City, Md.; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday Jan. 9 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 10:30 a.m. Interment with military honors will be at 2:00 p.m. in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE.
