CAMDEN-WYOMING - Joann Marie Kurcan passed away at Christiana Hospital on Tuesday, July 28, 2015. She was born on February 18, 1986 in Cebu, Philippines. She later moved to the United States at the age of seven in December 1989. She grew up in Camden-Wyoming, Delaware. At the time of her death, Joann was a staff sergeant in the Delaware Air National Guard and worked at the New Castle Air National Guard Base. During her time as a guardswoman, she had also served in Afghanistan. She had studied at Delaware Technical Community College in order to become a nurse. She had also worked as a medical assistant at Bayhealth Medical Center and several doctors' offices in Delaware. She was well loved by fellow staffers and bosses. In 2010, Joann started dating her future fiance Michael Fernandez, also a master sergeant in the Delaware Air National Guard. After a romantic trip to Puerto Rico, Joann became pregnant and the couple welcomed daughter Sophia in 2011. When she wasn't working, studying or doting on Michael and Sophia, Joann loved to cook, garden, and make art and crafts. She was especially proud of her small garden at her Smyrna home. Joann and Michael were going to get married at a beach wedding in Ocean City, Maryland on August 28 this year. Sophia was going to be one of their flower girls. They had plans to conceive another baby in the fall. They dreamed about future retirement plans such as RVing across the country. In addition to her fiance and daughter, Joann is survived by her mother Maria Cristina Kurcan, father Raymond Hopkins, and her siblings Mary Grace Arias, Melchor Arias, Gilbert Arias, Michael Jeffrey Kurcan, James Christopher Kurcan, Maria Louisa Bautista, Miguelito Bautista, and Arnel Bautista; her sister-in-law Monica Arias; her nieces and nephews Amelia Grace Griffith, Benjamin Travis Griffith, Savannah Arias, Damien Arias, Malachi Arias-Kurcan, Ethan Arias-Kurcan, and Kyleigh Arias-Kurcan; a large and extended family of cousins, uncles, aunts, and Michael's relatives who were eager to officially welcome her into their family; and of course, Joann's many friends and co-workers who love her. She is preceded in death by her brother Ian Arias. There will be a viewing on Monday night, August 3, from 6 to 9 pm, and another viewing on Tuesday morning, August 4, from 10 to 11:30 am. Viewings will be at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 E. Lebabon Rd., Dover, Delaware. After the Tuesday morning viewing, Joann will be transferred at 11:30 am for mass service at Church of the Holy Cross at 12 pm. The church is located at 631 South State St., Dover, Delaware. Interment will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 2 pm with full military honors, 21-gun salute, and the playing of TAPS. The cemetery is located at 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, Delaware.
